FINAL PARTY IN DRAGON QUEST IX

welp there were threads like this for other popular games, and I just finished this game recently so!
I had:
Minstrel (hero!) (using a sword)
Sage (using a wand)
Martial Artist (using a fan)
Ranger (using a boomerang)
I stuck with the Minstrel class for the hero and since I really didn't know what I was doing or what all the skills in the skill trees were (or even what all the skilltrees were or even all of the classes) I played it safe and went with Sword. In the end I found that I liked having a character that was capable in any situation.
The sage character started out as a Mage and I was pretty satisfied with that, but was kind of disappointed that she was never as effective as the martial artist in battle. When I unlocked the Sage I changed her to it and then found that I liked it better than the Mage, so stuck with it, even though she was about 10-15 levels behind the other characters. Multiheal was quite handy.
I chose the Marial Artist right at the start and stuck with that the entire game. Fast + deals ton of damage is the OPTIMAL design in past DQ games, and this game was no different. I went with fan as a weapon because it looked cool.
The Ranger started out as a Priest, but priests sucked in battles, and healing wasn't very important, and I had a Minstrel who could heal. Plus there were a bunch of items that were just as effective as a healer-class in this game. So I went with Ranger and chose boomerang since boomerangs rocked in DQIV. Starburst Throw is awesome.

I'm not at the end yet, and I have seven characters + my Sword/Minstrel hero... yeah. They all have multiple classes, too. My hero is focused almost entirely on Minstrel, but he has a few Martial Artist levels for Psyche Up (...guess I could just use Egg On on himself, but oh well) and I think Mage for Wizard Ward.
My current party is Zera the Priest with various Fource skills (staff - Caduceus is amazing), Vanessa the Martial Artist with Half-Inch (claws - sexy), and San'ri the Paladin who used to be a Warrior (spear - mercurial thrust makes up for Paladin's abysmal speed). I also have Kranz the hardcore Mage (whip, not super-useful but I have ATK+ skills and accessories on him), Celia the Gladiator/Ranger (axe - Parallax is as cool an animation as it was in VIII), some thief/priest dude (daggers, iirc) and I think another chick. Um. I do cycle through them, but I took a looooong break from the game and don't really remember!

Having a Sage is handy because you can change classes on the field on the fly!
I dabbled in the thief and warrior classes with my hero, but that's about it. I never unlocked the Armamentalist class because killing metal slimes with a mage after erecting a wizard ward was just TOO onerous. WAAAYYY too much dependence on luck.
If I play this game again I think I will go full out physical party. Fuck magic users. You don't need em!

Minstrel with a whip
Warrior with a sword
Martial Artist (previously Thief) with claws
Priest with a staff
didn't do much with different classes until the postgame :/

I beat the end boss with these vocations and weapons:
Minstrel (hero) - sword
Warrior - spear (multi-thrust ftw)
Mage - whip (bleh)
Priest - stave + sharp shades 8)
Right now I've ended up grinding in other vocations as I got trounced by one of the legacy bosses in the post-game. My final set-up would be something like:
Gladiator - spear, Sage - wand/axe, Paladin - stave. Not sure on Hero though.

I believe my final team was a Swordsman, Monk, Cleric and Wizard. (Not exact names, but it was the ones I remember using.)
Or was it a sage... can't remember...
