Hi, so you all know me at this point I think, so I won't bother with introductions, but if for some reason you need my credentials, yeah, just click my name and browse the five million or so game profiles I have on this site.

Anyway, I am trying to finish my old rm2k3 horror adventure game Backstage 2 and I am looking for someone who is really reasonably good with 2k3 eventing and graphical user interface type stuff (back in the olden days, we would call what I am looking for a 'CMS' which stood for Custom Menu System) to help me with that game's menu.

The game has a temporary menu which is functional, i.e. it works, but it's pretty ugly and a bit clunky. It uses entirely Message, Show Choice, and Conditional Branch, to be honest, because I have always been afraid of/not well suited to picture based menu systems using the show picture command.

I'd really like somebody who's good at this kind of stuff to help me transform my temporary menu into something a bit more aesthetically pleasing and convenient for the user. It doesn't need to be 'fancy' by any means (no matter what it will be better than the text based menu), and I'd prefer something clean and simple and lag-free to anything with elaborate and fancy graphical effects.

This is definitely a 'catch a fish', not a 'teach a man to fish' request. I'm not looking for someone to teach me this stuff or for a tutorial--Backstage 2 is very probably my last game, and even if it wasn't I've almost entirely moved on to VX at this point; ongoing computer issues notwithstanding, it's scripting I should be learning.

Anyway, this is a reasonably medium-to-long-term request, so if I don't get a lot of (or any) responses right away, I won't get discouraged. I'll just keep bumping this topic periodically over time, every few weeks or so. Worst comes to worst if I'm on the cusp of finishing the game and this is the only thing holding me back, I'll just release it with the cruddy text based menu. I can live with that even if it wouldn't be ideal.

So, request complete. Compensation = credit in a project over five years in development, and I will owe you a favor. (If you do a really good job I will pay you $5.00 US Cash Money, if you send me a self addressed stamped envelope. Fuck Paypal.)

I'll remember to include the magic word: please. And say also:

Thank you!
-Max McGee
I can do this, but will I have to create the pictures as well?
I would help if this wasn't the worst topic ever.

I don't think Max wants or needs help from trolls such as yourself. Good luck finding help Max!
if it's just something basic and nothing too insane I could help around

Why is this the worst topic ever, Calunio? Did I miss something? : (

Things that concern me...
1) I have done something to offend calunio?
2) I have literally said in response to someone's help topic the exact words "I would help if this wasn't the worst topic ever" and now it's coming back to haunt me.

***

Anyway.

It is fairly basic...how I imagine it would work is I show you the cruddy event code for the "menu" I have to give a hint as to the functionality requirements and demonstrate the variables and such being managed and displayed and you use that to furnish something better. It's standard adventure game stuff so, items, weapons, notes, that kind of thing.

@McBick: By pictures, do you mean pictures of like individual items and weapons, for instance, or the frames and boxes and whatsits that generally comprise a menu? I can try to find (not create) the former, but yes, I am asking for help with the latter.
Oh if it's that kind of thing then I can do it easily.
Just tell me the menu layout (even shapes in paint would be fine) and pm me the details...and the latest build of the game I guess?

if it makes you feel better I actually made the base for skie's time cards/made cms for other people like convergence/made a tactical battle system before I quit out of AI rage so I'm not a total noob

I can send you the game (and I will, before next wednesday!) and yeah, just take a look in the common events, the one called 'Temp Menu' or whatever has all of the functionality I need.

As to layout I honestly have no idea...it's another thing I'm bad at. I could throw together a terrible mockup in MS paint but I feel like you could come up with something better just looking at the functionality of the menu.

Thanks a lot, by the way. : )

(I know you're not a noob, you are in fact kind of a legend as far as I'm aware.)
Well mockup is still nice even when it's crap, at least I have a basic idea of your taste :3

lol that's something new to hear about
Cause the way you asked was very arrogant, that's all.

If you could throw together a terrible mockup on paint, people will know what you want specifically.

I didn't know. Weird. :p

I don't know that I actually have either it was just a guess....how was the way I asked arrogant?

I am very confused by that comment; I did not *think* I was being arrogant at all.

Please explain yourself, so that I can improve my future behavior.

Was it this part? Well the site is a very small and insular community so I think the few users we have do know me...and I really do have lots of game profiles. I didn't say that I was the maker of tons of brilliant visionary games or anything...

Yeah, this. I read this as "I'm an awesome dude, help me and you'll get the honor of being mentioned in my credits. It's slightly worsened by

And I just noticed this last part, which is really bad too:
if you send me a self addressed stamped envelope

Honestly, sending a self adressed stamped envelope is not worth five bucks, let alone designing a REALLY GOOD cms from scratch. In the light of this obviousness, I couldn't help but assume that the real compensation was "giving you credit in the game of an awesome person as myself".

Just saying cause you asked. I don't want to turn this into a discussion. That's just how I read the topic. You're asking for something really complicated and time consuming. You should just have asked more nicely and humbly, and next time you offer money to someone to make something for you (which you shouldn't have done), offer a value that's proportional to the kind of work you're demanding.

-end-

Also, I told you to post your terrible paint mockup because I might consider doing it. This is the kind of thing I enjoy doing, I just don't want to lose focus on my own stuff.

Sorry your declamatory statement was inadequate to prevent me from discussing this, Calunio.

I couldn't help but assume that the real compensation was "giving you credit in the game of an awesome person as myself".

Not that I even said I was awesome, but...aren't there hundreds and hundreds of help topics that are 'I'm an awesome dude, help me and I'll mention you in my credits' or even 'I'm not a particularly awesome dude, help me and I'll mention you in my credits' or even 'help me for literally nothing'?

This is definitely a 'catch a fish', not a 'teach a man to fish' request.

Why does this worsen it? Wouldn't teaching me to do this take exponentially more time and effort?

Honestly, sending a self adressed stamped envelope is not worth five bucks, let alone designing a REALLY GOOD cms from scratch.

Why? People have volunteered to design me really good graphics from scratch and gotten nothing. I don't know what the economy is like wherever you live, but a SASE costs WAY, WAY less than $5.00 (like, I think around $0.70 tops?) so they'd still be getting a profit (if an SASE cost anywhere near $5.00 I wouldn't have submitted nearly as much fiction as I have) AND isn't it better to be paid SOMETHING for your work, even if it's very small, than nothing? I'd much rather get paid $1.00 for every RM game I make than nothing, even if it's a really small amount I couldn't really do anything with. Honestly people do more work than this on other people's games for credit or not even that.

When you asked for my help with dialogue on Beautiful Escape, I agreed to do so, ultimately, for free even though the going rate on what you were asking me to do, in terms of professional writing rate standards, was over a hundred dollars if I were to charge you say three cents per word (what I get paid as a freelancer for tabletop RPGs right now). I was willing to do it for free. (Disclosure: He later decided he wanted to do everything himself.) Dozens of people have helped me for free. I think that $5.00 is in fact better than free, but you somehow think that $5.00 is worse than nothing or meant to be an insult. If I was going to do something anyway, I'd rather get paid $5.00 for it than not.

You should just have asked more nicely and humbly, and next time you offer money to someone to make something for you (which you shouldn't have done), offer a value that's proportional to the kind of work you're demanding.

I am confused because I specifically tried to make my post polite and humble and friendly and so it is really intriguing to read how in someone's mind I could have failed so spectacularly at that. Honestly, you say I should have asked more nicely and humbly, but this post was a result of me turning both my nice and my humble dials to MAXIMUM. So somewhere there is a disconnect here.

Also, I told you to post your terrible paint mockup because I might consider doing it. This is the kind of thing I enjoy doing, I just don't want to lose focus on my own stuff.

I appreciate your offer but if Ness is really so gracious as to be interested in assisting me, I think I will try to minimize the amount of people who see my massively sub-par MS Paint skills. I appreciate your offer though.
I'm still waiting for it btw 'u')/
