BEST ENGINE TO MAKE A STRATEGY RPG

Greetings everyone,
I'm wondering which RPG Maker Engine I should look into for making a Strategy RPG in the same vein as classic titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea and Tactics Ogre. I have heard that the old Sim RPG Maker 95 was designed for Strategy RPGs however that program is ancient. I have also heard that the new RPG Makers primarily XP and VX have scripts for turning them into Strategy RPGs.
Here are some other features that I would also need for a possible proof of concept production:
Branching Storylines
Class System (Similar to FFT)
Growth System (Different Stat Growth Based on Current Class)
Multiplier System (Different Stat Multipliers based on Current Class)
Different Elevations in Combat
Also if anyone has any links to any RPG Maker created games/demos for Strategy RPGs that would awesome, as information on this topic seemed relatively sparse on google (and the forums at RPG Revolution don't seem to be working correctly for new users).
Thanks,
Paul Street

Well, you're right about Sim RPGMaker 95 not fulfilling what you want. I'm using it for my current project and I'm running into the odd limitation >:0
One of my big gripes is that we haven't had a Sim/Tactical Maker since it. Your best bet is probably scripting/eventing what you want in XP/VX.

Yeah, Sim RPG Maker 95 is mechanically quite inflexible. I've worked with it (gee, a decade ago now) and usually recommend avoiding it.
I've heard there's a VX script going by Tomoaky (not sure whether that's the script's name or a person's name). Wouldn't surprise me if there are a couple more floating around for XP and/or VX. XP/VX is probably your best bet in RPG Makers; different combat elevation would likely be the single bad sticking point. A lot of the point of using an RM is using it to construct maps, and those aren't going to be isometric. You might be able to compromise or come up with something creative that suits you, though.
I only really know of two RM games in the approximate genre beyond a bare demo state: Aurora Wing for RM2K (disclosure: mine) and Cast Aside for RMXP.
If you filter games on this site by genre tags "strategy" or "tactics" you can find some of the less-progressed projects. (As well as some other games that their makers feel are tactical or strategic, but that I personally wouldn't put in the "tactics-RPG" genre; anyway, those filters don't generate terribly long lists.) This would also open up maker selection a bit; I construed "RPG Maker" narrowly, but there are a couple Sim RPG Maker projects, an ika game I don't know much about, etc.
If you do find anything worth mentioning on other sites I'd be interested to hear about it.

I posted a demo at other sites but it's really old and nothing like the current version. Unfortunately, there's no demo/completed file for this version.
edit: btw, there's 2 major battle system scripts that convert to tactics: Gubids Tactical Battle System (XP/VX), and Tomoaky's SRPG (just VX?)

Oh man, I think I still have some of those old tutorials you did way back when in the days of SimRPG.cjb.net. Christ I made a world map tutorial because making one is completely unintuitive (and looking at it now, there's a bug that caused characters to get duplicated).
SimRPG95 is a piece of trash. Don't use it.
If there's a high enough demand I could add a tactical battle system as one of the default systems of 20XX. The demand has to be pretty high, though (like burning).

Thanks for the information. Chronicle of the Wings looks almost EXACTLY what I am looking for (Tomoaky's SRPG) - it doesn't have height mechanics (but let's not sweat the details). Link: http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=41379
I also looked at the Aurora Wing information. I'll discuss it with my team, I know some of the members loved Fire Emblem, but I am not as familiar with it.
Another question: Should I be looking to make a small more traditional RPG first to acclimate myself to RPG Maker VX? Or should I be looking to dive straight in with the SRPG scripts?
Thanks for the help and input so far!
As Space_Monkey mentioned, VX has the GTBS. It's pretty easy to use and install and probably your best bet. http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=4843
It doesn't have everything you mentioned, but quite a few other scripts and some eventing will add the rest of those features.
EDIT: Ahh, ninja'd.
But anyway, you should at least tinker with VX before leaping right into multiple scripts, especially SRPG ones that wildly change how the engine works.

Using a custom battle system makes the process more a lot more difficult. I had trouble getting gtbs to work correctly. So far I've had more luck with Tomoaky's SRPG but it is a lot less user friendly. Not to mention 1/2 of the code info is in Japanese. (still very thankful for what is translated).
For example, how comfortable are you with this? I don't know if there's easier ways to do this but I had to come up with some creative ways to problem solve. I wanted to change all of the in-battle sound effects. To find it, I had to search ".ogg" in the script to figure out which line called this or that audio file.
Upon searching the script, I found that line 627 in the Scene_SRPG, labeled "# 協力効果音" for "Cooperative effective sound", contained a .ogg file. In other words, that is the audio file that is played when battlers "cooperate".
To get enemies to cooperate, you put "<assist=n>" where n equals the % chance that the enemies will help each other in the "Note" section of the enemy tab of the database.
There's a lot of little things that you don't do in the regular system. That said, if you spend a full day messing with it you will probably start getting a lot more comfortable.

Thanks! Always good to hear. (psst try the OH demo, tell me where it sucks)

Remembering the purpose of the thread, I should say it would probably be a huge pain to modify AW into a much different game. RM2K was a bad platform for single-point-of-control.
I don't think it's necessarily useful to make a traditional RPG, per se, but some screwing around with the engine before (or while) diving in probably wouldn't hurt.

I vaguely recall that website. Man, is that ancient history. I was actually looking at some scraps of it the other day in the Wayback Archive.
This is going to be a little confused, whatever, its a strategy rpg, i played a while ago, the engine(could be xp)? Could be entirely custom?Tall characters, except in battle, many factions, coalitions, the hero is a runaway from his own country and has the particularity to get eventually in a transe, sort of double personality, where he rips apart each and every one, it was excellent (there's also a big castle where he ends up and which characters fill progressively, like in Legion Saga, the battles are noted, {badge of honor, there's a badge of shame if you won really badly}, wether you did a more or less good battle, it's a real story AND a real strategy game, its complete), it could be a really interesting example, can't remember the name at all, sorry.(Also i'd love to find it...)
I got it, it's : EXIT FATE!
I got it, it's : EXIT FATE!
I got it : Exit Fate, the double post is intentional so the topic "upgrades", aside from being an excellent game, made with xp, i think it contains 100s of interesting ideas for a strategy game maker.

So, how do I go about showing you the demand? Blood oath; first kin; sacrifice of a thousand goats?

I can sacrifice a pig, if that will help? maybe even a sheep or two.
