NOTHING IS PERFECT

There is a game (or two) I'd give a 5/5, I just never bothered review it (them).
But I think that 'games can't get 5/5' as a blanket statement is just retarded.

It seems to me that when people are saying "no games should have five stars," what they're really saying is "I do not think this game in particular deserves five stars but I'm certainly not going to review it so I'm just going to cry instead."
Seriously, whining and complaining has become far too acceptable a response in this community. This website has an absurd number of ways for you to make significant, meaningful contributions (reviews, articles, tutorials, etc.) and if your response to everything is to never use any of the tools available and you're just going to complain instead, you probably shouldn't be surprised if no one ever takes you seriously.

Totally worse to REFUSE to give a 5, than to actually give a game one. I have a much bigger problem with that.
I hold a higher regard for reviewers who would give 5 stars to a game they thought to be great, than those who refuse to think any game should be given 5 under any circumstance (other than being perfect in every detail).
Wouldn't a game that is a mainstay or cultural/community icon deserve the highest rating for it's contribution to the human fabric?
Goofy as the above sounds, few will argue a perfect score for films like The Godfather, Rocky, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, The Matrix, and G.I.Joe : The Movie. These all contributed greatly to what came after and transcend the individual's "Pacino zigged when he should have zagged" opinion.
But since reviews are done on an individual level, the above doesn't really apply. Cultural appreciation and bestowment of the title "Classic" is something that takes time to sink in.

I think of ratings as this, 1/5 stars means 1 out of 5 will like the game, 3/5 stars means 3 out of 5 will enjoy the game and so on. I also believe that you cannot make a 5/5 game as there will be some who will not like it if not at least a few people.
I think it's better to think of ratings as percentages, 1/5 = 20% of people will like this game and so on...
Ratings vary because of people's opinions but that doesn't mean that there isn't a general consensus about a game. I say if I get a 2/5 or a 3/5 I'd be happy, I'm not going to be arrogant and say I can make a game everyone will enjoy and it will get 5 stars because I can't, in actuality noone can.

I don't think you understand how ratings work. If you cut off people from getting a 5th star then all you are doing is using a rating tool incorrectly by treating it as a 4 star rating system.
Well maybe I have high standards or am a harsh critic but I haven't played a game that I thought was worthy of 5/5 yet...
No game on this site should have a perfect score? Wow, that is a very flawed statement, even more so since no structure is given supporting such a statement. I believe that "no game on this site should be called perfect" would serve as a viable substitute to the aforementioned statement.
Reviews are a concepts of relativity, not definition or complete fact. The review of a game is based on the person reviewing it. Sure some generalizations will be made, but overall much of the review is opinionated. The most beautiful picture is judged by each eye that peers upon it. This is true for any artistic medium, especially video games, whether amateur or professional. So it really comes down to the person who plays and what you want out of it. Reviews only serve as the arrows that lead to a treasure.

Not sure if it has been said or I just missed it, but I don't think a 5/5 should mean a game is "perfect" but was really enjoyable or was well done/written.
idk though, if I saw a game with a 5/5 score it wouldn't even bother me and I certainly wouldn't bitch about it.
If that person enjoyed it then they enjoyed, and I'm sure other people will too.

While perfection doesn't exist, a 5/5 score does. A 5/5 score does not equal perfection, for me it equals a game that, not only did you thoroughly enjoy, but that you would happily play again and even recommend to friends and family.
end topic i dont even need to read any more posts after this one not going to
