TALES OF DESTINY/DESTINY 2 QUESTION

Hi, I was just wondering...
I am currently playing Tales of Phantasia PSX version, loving it so far, so I will probably want to play another Tales game, either Destiny or Eternia (Destiny 2).
Just wanted to ask, can I understand/enjoy Eternia without playing Destiny first? From what I read, Destiny is inferior to both Eternia and Phantasia(psx version), so I was thinking I would skip it. And it seems Eternia takes place in the same world, but other than that, I didn't find any other connection.
Those are lenghty RPG games, so I probably wouldn't have the time/patience to go through all of them, and since ToD seems inferior to both....
Can somebody enlighten me a bit? :D
PS: Off topic, why are the world maps in early RPGs based on the real world? In Phantasia and Dragon Quest 3, the map is just the world map with some tweaks for example.

Tales of Eternia (Destiny II) has no connection with Tales of Destiny. It takes place in an entirely different world. You might be confusing Eternia with the sequel to Tales of Destiny which was released in Japan for the PS2 under the name Tales of Destiny 2.
I guess what I am saying is that you should have no problem play Eternia without playing Destiny. I know I didn't. I hope this made sense to you. Different games with the same name is confusing as hell.

I'd also like to add that you shouldn't believe what you've read about Destiny being inferior to Eternia. In my mind, Eternia was much worse (although still a solid game overall), and if you like Phantasia, Destiny is very similar in a number of ways that Eternia just isn't.
The person that gave you the info on Destiny and Eternia had it completely backwards.
Both games, though, are substantially more playable than many of the latest Tales games.

Were you referring to my post or sbester's? If it was mine, could you elaborate?

I was referring to Smilewithstyle's original post. My apologies.
Thanks for the info, no wonder I confused the games, there is a game Tales of Destiny 2 released in japan, for PS2, and then there is Tales of Destiny 2 released in US for PS1, renamed from Tales of Eternia because of trademark issues. Sheesh :D
And the comparison that I read might have been ToD/ToD2(PS2), so I might just give ToD a chance after I finish Phantasia, leaving Eternia for last.
Thanks for clearing things up!

You know, the PS2 Japanese Tales of Destiny 2 is pretty excellent as well :P
I was able to get the iso working on my psp some time ago, used a gamefaqs translation to read along with as I played. If your system can handle it, the ps2 emulator works pretty well wit most games now, and a translation group is soon to release an english patch for the game. Probably by the time you finish both those games it'll be ready.
No one should take my pirate advice too seriously though... I'm a bad person.
