WHAT MAKES A GAME RATE 5 OUT OF 5 STARS?

When you review games, what do you look for in a game for it to be good?
Unfortunately, the entire review process is totally subjective to the reviewer. Most reviewers will simply not award 5 out of 5 because there's always some dopey flaw they see (and really, who doesn't enjoy a game without thinking "this zig could use some zag" once or twice?).

If I were a Reviewing Man, I'd award 5 stars on the basis of "Would I recommend this to friends who aren't into the RM scene?" The kind of game that's so good, it can go outside of our incestuous little community and not be laughed and scoffed at.
I agree with Dyhalto. One shouldn't take a star rating from a single reviewer too seriously, especially since professional critics are, by their very nature, very opinionated. Any critic worth listening to knows their own biases and states them publicly, so that a reader or viewer knows what they are getting.

There are of course degrees of objectivity, but to be truly objective an analysis must be a consensus of a large number of people, much like Rotten Tomatoes.
A game that finds itself with a full score is truly remarkable. It is well presented, has enjoyable gameplay, has very few flaws or drawbacks and in general is just a great gaming experience.

Five stars out of five doesn't mean that it is the greatest game and no game could be better. It does not mean the game is absolutely perfect.

It does mean that it's one of the very best you can download in the opinion of the writer of the review.

Hasn't this topic already been discussed through and through..?!
that's why I copy pasted my response.
Go onto Amazon... look up the American Final Fantasy 3... that game isn't even 5 stars.
Well, based on what I like from a game, a five star game should be a game that minimizes its flaws and maximizes its strong points. If it uses a custom menu or combat system, it should be fun and easy to use with minimal micromanagement or frustration. It should have little busywork and avoid using tactics to artificially stretch out the length of the game, such as pointless backtracking. The challenge should be balanced throughout, starting out easy but getting progressively harder as the skill of the player improve. Visuals and music are subjective, but they should show some effort involved in their construction and a consistent design aesthetic throughout. If the game has a story, it should have good pacing and proceed logically without unexplained plot twists and characters suddenly acting out of character for the sake of the narrative. In other words, to use an old cliche, it should be a solid gaming experience.

This! I still remember how I couldn't lose the smile on my face hours after playing warcraft 2 for the first time haha.

The game evidently had its share of flaws but I had tons and tons of fun with it.
That's a 5/5 to me

"Final Fantasy III...Final Fantasy VI...it's all the same to me. This game is horrible and practically unplayable. The challenge is just a LITTLE too high, and level building takes hours and isn't even worth it. Stick with FFVII"

"this game was very sad... i think the graphics were terrible and i think they need to remake that game or something..."
Anyway Kentona... my point is people think of FF 3 US or FF VII as the best 2 FF games and even on Amazon neither game gets 5 stars in total. Always 4.5
5 star: (57)
4 star: (2)
3 star: (1)
2 star: (0)
1 star: (2)

5 star average review score, 62 reviews.

There are very few games I would award 5 out of 5 to, commercial or otherwise. When I'm rating a game, I try to take everything into consideration. Literally, everything. Graphics, music, sound, mechanics, playability...and those are just the major groupings. It's tough to say what exactly would earn such a score out of me. It's more like a really long list of things you shouldn't do as opposed to things you should. It's a semi-logical affair on a very broad scale that only gets more complicated the more people you ask.

It's easier to just make the game as best you can and take feedback into consideration for improvement.
1. mapping
2. uncrappy graphics that fit to each other
3. no monotone gameplay
4. no overused music
(5. no overused story)

There can be more but these are the main thing. If you have those well done the game should have at least 4.5 stars.

"this game was very sad... i think the graphics were terrible and i think they need to remake that game or something..."

what is this I don't even

A 5/5 game is one with few major flaws that can overall be considered solid, well presented and fun

and exceptionally so
Anything that plays a big part in your game has to be well done. For example, if your game has a lot of cutscenes, those cutscenes better be good and backed by a great story. However, if story isn't a big focus of the game, then a "simple, but well told" approach works. It works out as such, your game has to be really fun for most of the time and have very little or no time being boring.
Put your penis away Kentona :-)
I'm soon going to start reviewing games, and I have about 5 things that will make my decision, the five things are:Story, gameplay, graphics and music, difficulty, and posture. You may get the other things, but by posture, I going to make a chart on each review (I think I will at least), and will show how it would stand on it's own without the creator being known to the public or a great hook, like if someone incredibly unpopular made it and if they used nothing that this real version you have here, ex.:I expect you to die, you play a villain going through puzzles with a time limit that if you screwed up, you get a game over, without those puzzles it would be dull with no challenge at all and it couldn't stand without the challenge, though it's kind of dumb you don't really fight the man, so the difficulty could be upped by making battles that if you win you get a second, third, forth chance and so on, until you were beat. That's a mini review in it's self but now you know what posture is, in this case.

Posture doesn't make sense to me. But sounds new.
