DISCUSSION: TERMINATOR RPG

I'd like to discuss for a moment the possibility of an RPG based off the Terminator film series. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that one could work?

Personally, I think one would work much better if it were set in the future during the machine war. That opens up a lot of possibilities, for one it would be much easier to incorporate original characters and Terminator models.
Anything can work, if done well. That being said, I would be more inclined to make something inspired by than related to.

I think a lot can be done with stories about machines rebelling against humans. It's a story that's been done a few times, but it can still be done and be successful if it has it's own aspects that make it similar yet different from other such stories.
There is quite a lot of possibility for the setting - the last film proved that, and that hadn't even reached the point of desperation we saw in Kyle's flashbacks through the first film. Whilst I agree that original games are usually best, there's nothing at all wrong with a little fandom - and at least it wouldn't be ANOTHER Final Fantasy clone.

A tight cast and lack of NPCs would put a closer focus on characterisation for those that you did have. Since the setting has Humans an endangered species and constantly on the move. I'd take the standpoint of giving every NPC in the story a name and a character of their own that you can learn about - that way the player feels more connected to them and wants to activly protect them - feeling worse if/when the plot calls for deaths or he fails.

But don't make the T-800 series throw-away baddies. By all means have loads of various pre-made types of machines, but ensure that when a real Terminator strolls into the room it's a 'we're all screwed now' moment.

Does any of that help? :)

I do not think RPG would be the ideal genre for this; Terminator seems much more FPS to me. Ignoring the fact that every FPS/Arcade Shooter based on The Terminator was pretty awful.
I just started tapping the Terminator theme song on my desk, thanks a lot for that.

Anyway, I'm with Julev. This could certainly work if you managed to approach it properly. I agree that it would probably work out better if you set it during the war against the machines. There's a lot you could do in that timeline since there is just so much material to work with, as well as a lot of room for you to stretch your legs and be creative.

The cool thing about the Terminator universe is that due to time travel you could easily base your game in an alternate possible future -- either in a modern setting or post-apocalyptic. That gives you a lot more freedom to put your own stamp on the settings, plot, and characters since you are not necessarily bound by what has already been established.
Weird, the other week me and a couple friends watched all 4 terminator films (for some reason in reverse order) and I had the compulsion to make terminator 2 into an rm game (because it's the best one) I already have it figured out in my head somewhat, now it's just a matter of whether I ever bother to do it.

But yeah, I guess that means I think a Terminator RPG is a decent idea, even if just for the fun of recreation and fan-wankery.
This could be fun, but I agree with Julev, do something loosely based off or inspired by Terminator as opposed to just saying "This is a Terminator game". By the sound of it, you're going to be doing 99.9% of the legwork regardless, right? Might as well make it legwork for an original game.
I'd say play as the T800 from the first movie in the future, going to the past and hunting Sarah. They always get away... Then once you die another one is sent back to live T2 and then T3 and so on.
This is way better than a Terminator RPG:
