OVERHEAD ACTION GAMES

I just got the idea from another thread, "Short Games:Yay or Nay", and Lockez said something along the line that if you want to make a shorter game, it would work well with an action game more than an RPG. Well, I've been thinking of extending my game so it's more like an RPG, and doesn't take just a few minutes to finish. Well, in most Sonic games today, it's COMPLETELY about speed, and I've been thinking,"Why don't I put this into an RPG? Like a puzzle?", well, here's why:It wouldn't fit, like when was the last time you saw an overhead game, where your running like fire is chasing after you and you can only truly move 2-3 directions(2:Left and Right,3:Left, Right, Up)? Seriously? So, what are your thoughts:Save this for another game? Go with the idea? Could you please give me some examples? I would be happy to know I'm not going WAY out of the multi-verse, and thanks if you post...and one last thing:
THE CAKE IS NOT A LIE!After THAT randomness about the cake, goodbye.

When you say "three directions" and mention left, right and up, I'm thinking something along the lines of a vertical shooter rather than an RPG with puzzle elements. But perhaps what you're imagining is different than what I'm envisioning.

In Sonic 06, during speed sections you can't go backwards, but in the RPG I'm guessing they would give you that choice for going forwards, in Sonic Colors, you can walk backwards, but that only interupts the speed.
