WHAT OTHER GENRES/GAMES DO YOU LIKE/PLAY THAT AREN'T RPGS?
Posts
I'm not knocking RPGs, after all it's what brought most of us here. However it's always cool to diversify, and having played video games for a long time, I really like to break out and try and play new genres. What games do you really enjoy that aren't RPGs? Let's try to get some cool discussion going on the DARK SIDE OF RMN.
I really have a lot to say on this subject but I'll hang back and see where it goes first.

Yeah actually I've been wanting to see the same thing, I need some variety too. I usually like games such as action adventure or just pure action. I am a big fan of co-op games like double dragon back in the old days. I wish they made a river city ransom online game...
I was big into RTSes before they went 3D and overcomplicated the genre. Command & Conquer is one of my all-time favorite games. I used to mod Red Alert quite heavily, too. I played StarCraft but never online/battle.net. I only played with my friends co-op vs AI. The last RTS I really got into was C&C Generals. I am currently trying to get into C&C 3
I liked FPSes back when they were fun and not grey/brown. Unreal Tournament was a ton of fun. So was GoldenEye on the N64 (the remake on the Wii kind of sucks - where the fuck are my remote mines, bitch?). And in general Why a two weapon limit. WHYYYYYY? Starwars Battlefront on the XBOX was the last FPS-like game I've played extensively, but I just picked up Battlefront 2 for the PC for $10. It's pretty good.
I played the shit out of platformers like Super Mario Bros (3 is the best, btw). Way too many to list, and the 2D platformer genre is one I want them to make more of.
I don't care for any fighting games - Super Smash Bros is the only fun fighting game I've ever played. The rest are so... meh and finger pretzel-y, where I fighting the controls more than I am fighting the opponent.
I liked several racing games, like Mario Kart and Burnout and F-Zero. Fuck realism though. Arcade-y racing games are where the fun are. Realistic racing games are bleh. (same with realistic flying games)
I also enjoyed flying games like SW: Rogue Squadron and Fury 3 and Descent (hybrid flying-FPS).
"casual" games like Plants vs Zombies and Forgotten Lands are a lot of fun. Angry Birds is pretty meh, though. Also, fuck off hidden-object games. And quit fucking posing as adventure games goddammit.
SimCity and Civ III were also huge timesinks of mine.
For sports games, the only ones I really got into were the 2D top down NHL games.
In general, it seems like I prefer arcade games and the "fuck-realism-here's-fun-instead" game design school of thought. Maybe that's why I don't care for a lot of the new games coming out these days? They just don't seem fun to me.

I don't play sports games... I think that is the only genre I don't play. I've been a very big fan of third-person shooters this generation.
I love well-designed Action Platforming games, such as the excellent Strider 2 for PSX and the older Castlevania and Megaman games. And I enjoy Beat-em-ups that have a lot of depth like D&D Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara.
I take the best pleasure in games that give me realistic control of my characters and that test my reaction time, quick analysis of and response to different situations, etc. and that's why I enjoy Fighting games so much... Well-designed ones, that is. Like Street Fighter Alpha 3, Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3) and the newer Dead or Alive games. I did years of martial arts so that too might fuel the interest.
Although I love horror themes, I don't get into horror games as much as in other games. I just don't like the usual "fetch quest" mechanic.
I don't get into any First Person Perspective game. The lack of a realistic sight window kills the immersion and the feeling of being in control for me.
I usually don't enjoy Sports games either. To me it feels to damn repetitive and boring. I love to play sports for real though.

I play mostly non-RPGs I guess. I've been having a lot of fun with co-op games of different kinds occasionally lately. Playing with friends is a lot more fun than playing with not-friends.
Still single-player experiences will always have a place in my heart. Looking at my steam games I play I guess... I'm into all kinds of games.
And I said I play mostly non-RPGs but looking at it most of the games I play have RPG elements!
But yeah. Other favourite games... I like first person shooters. I suppose I really do. Left4Dead 2, Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2. I guess if a game has 2 in it then it's alright. (Battlefield 2142 has two 2s!)
Though I suppose now that Battlefield 3 is out I have to change that outlook and look forward to games with 3s in them!
Apart from the occasional good shooter I also like strategy games. I have loads of hours put into Europa Universalis 3 (look there's a 3... So there is a precedent for those 3s) and Tropico 3 (another 3!). Also a gem I found some time ago for some casual strategy fun that requires heavy thinking Frozen Synapse, you should all seriously try it.
Speaking of Europa Universalis 3, the upcoming Crusader Kings 2 looks pretty awesome too, but just like, say Football Manager 2010, you could make the argument that Crusader Kings and Football Manager are RPGs.
Other strategy games I enjoy are the Total War series. Generally when it comes to strategy I don't like it to be too frantic. If I can pause or if it is turnbased then it is definitely for me. The exception would be my hours put into Dawn of War, but there's a pause button there even though it is hidden. And that's really the only reason I play that game. And the fact that it's set in the Warhammer 40k universe and also really seems to "get" it. It's a case of me playing a game more for the setting and atmosphere than for the actual game.
Finally I suppose there's Grand Theft Auto, which is just such an awesome series that I can even live through horrible, horrible PC ports just to play it.
On console I like to play music games occasionally. I don't have a console anymore, but whenever I go to my mom's (and my little brother's), I tend to pick up a plastic guitar and play a bit. Because it's fun. I've also been a fan of the Resident Evil games on console, but haven't been keeping up lately. (WHERE ARE MY ZOMBIES MAN) I love the metaplot of Resident Evil though. It's crazy and awesome.
This was just a very long post saying that I play almost anything. I prefer games where I get to think just a little bit. But my play history indicates that I also just like to shoot things (I want Space Marine!).
In fact one of the genres I like the least is the jrpg!

I played shedloads of TF2 during the summer but that's dwindled down a bit since. I'm just not a fan of online games in general; I prefer to have a goal to work towards.
Visual novels such as the Hotel Dusk and Ace Attorney series are my main love outside RPGs. Also Bust-A-Groove

I loved Dungeon Keeper 2.
You're in luck Craze the market is oversaturated with tower defense games. Especially on Steam.

I like that other games let you jump, or has jumping that does something.
Xenogears is the best RPG suddenly.

Karsu and I are highly critical of TD games. The ones that stick out to us are Immortal Defense and Kingdom Rush; the former is ~$10 and is a story-based TD game set in space about the apotheosis of a madman, the latter is free-to-play online.
Most TD games suck.

I hear Sanctum is really good (and it's on a free weekend on Steam at the moment). Also Dungeon Defenders.
I play the load of PS2 action games more than I ever RPG'd like: Shinobi, Devil May Cry, and etc. Not God of War though. That's complete trash. Otherwise, I play the Castlevania series a lot as while as a lot of other action sidescrollers. With the recent Castlevanias, I wish they would just take away the RPG mechanics, heh. Probably the biggest detriment to the games besides level design.
Visual novels. (Don't laugh)
Seriously, though--look past the crappy/pandering/hilariously not-safe-for-work ones and there's a handful that are kind of amazing. A few examples are Sekien no Inganock (which is basically Perdido Street Station meets Revolutionary Girl Utena), Ever17 (LOST meets the Poseidon Adventure, except they actually have an answer for everything) and CROSS CHANNEL (one of the best character studies I've ever read, in any medium.) They require the patience of a saint but when they're good, they can be pretty brilliant.
Otherwise I guess I don't aim so much for different genres as for quirky stuff across genres--i.e. Okami, Immortal Defense, Treasure games, strategy/bullet hell hybrids...
