And its meh. I don't really play MMOs, because they're boring click fests. This is no different. The start quest was very meh and I had an interesting bug at the start of it that wouldn't let me out of the first room but drained my health dead because I took so long.
Customization is fantastic and I saw a Bayonetta flying around after the start quest. The sad thing for the game is 75% of players haven't even reached the first achievement.
Combat could have been less click based and more action oriented given the subject matter. My powers of wall crawling (not that I asked for them) seemed to be pointless as a stealth character when you're forced to click kill your way through enemies to get to the next section. Couldn't I at least stealth kill while clinging to the ceiling?
Melee combat could have been a lot richer. There is a block, an attack, a special attack and a jump button. But I would have liked some diversity, like a jump kick... or a push block right as the enemy attacks to parry, or dodging or hold left and attack for a jab, down and attack for a kick.

What level did you reach?
It's not as boring as you say it is(to anyone else reading this). I don't agree with/understand most of what your saying.
The game is fun and if you don't have any other MMO's it's worth playing. Once you start unlocking high end abilities you'll have more fun, that's usually the way games are.
There is an issue with servers, simply put, there is too many players and not enough room for them all. It was really bad since launch but it seems to be getting better. I know that enraged some people and they quit forever, but it is getting better.

I just played more. I'm 3 hours in and level 7 and yes it did get better. There are better moments and worse moments. The worse moments are even worse than the meh moments of the first mission. By bad I mean everyone is a superhero. Nothing feels super about it when there are a hundred of you out there. Makes me think that if things got that out of control we'd see the military or at least more than 1 officer...
I don't think its the lack of abilities that make the game not fun. I think its the fact there is no danger and I'm just clicking a lot.
There seems to be a continuity issue in the fact that... I beat Scarecrow... therefore his mineons shouldn't still be on the street causing chaos. I should be taken to a new server or a new section where they're all gone and replaced by bums or citizens or police officers... maybe with the occassional purse snatcher or jail break.
I felt that it got better with the Scarecrow mission because I was by myself before finding Batwoman. Or maybe I was the only one that made it that far, but I doubt that.
After the scarecrow mission and race patrolling through the city I stumbled upon what looked to be the villain's first mission. So I went around there being a jerk and killing the people they are trying to defend. Well I only assume its trying to defend. Since it was someone I could hit surrounded by cops I couldn't hit.
Maybe I just really don't like MMOs. It feels more like this is a time killer and not entertainment or creative or productive. Like busy work. But maybe that's what MMOs are. I didn't really see any social component. I could chat... but no one was chatting even in an area with a bazillion heroes.
It doesn't feel like a superhero game so much as a MMO with superhero paint over it.

It seems like a glossy, OK game, but every time I tried to log in, I couldn't.
I play City of Heroes, so I like super hero MMOs.
Gotta admit, the super speed as PART of your character is cooler than anyone can unlock it.
I also like there was a speed test race at the start.
The setting though seemed a bit bastardised. Though, I did really go WOW when I reached the Watchtower and looked down at Earth.
There are good qualities... Like DCU is way more actiony than CoH. However, the social is less. Despite being surrounded by Heroes, I still feel like a super Dudesoft when I swoop in to save a friend's life.
In CoH, you can have Super Jump, hover, fly, teleport, and speed.
In DCU you can have fly, speed, and acrobatic.
Acrobatic and teleport are matched in cool.
It's a trade off which game you play!

I do like the speed system. It beats my playing Dragon Warrior 8 and thinking there really needs to be a run button... then realizing oh I am running and walk speed is slower.
The speed races seem like patroling the streets. I've gotten platinum on both of them and looking at your Steam achievements... only 26% of players have gotten a platinum on the first race. That's almost like saying 26% of all Steam players have beaten the first mission.
I'm now 7 hours in I feel that I've completed 3 big missions. One seems to have taken me 3 hours because I had to do it 2 times before I figured out how to progress after a certain part. See you were supposed to set one thing so it counts down. The game shows you hold a button to pick something up or do something... but what it failed to do was tell me to do it again to carry it once I set it. I had been setting this thing and running to various points of a building. Then when I figured it out, a boss tediously killed me. So I went out to repair my gear, get some health potions then came in and killed all the enemies again only to get killed for the next frustrating hour. Maybe they really want you to bring a friend.
I think I'm done for a while. Time to write the creators.

I'm a big Champions Online fan, and everyone in that game I talk to say that it's MILES ahead of DC Universe Online. Shame that Champions Online isn't on 360 or PS3.
... I see all these articles that its player base jumped up 1,000% but of those 1,000%, only 28% beat the first mission. That percentage is climbing up from 24 earlier this week. I'm going to ballpark it at 10,000,000 players now, 28% of which made it an hour into the game. 3,000,000 players all have the potential to give the game $5, but i'd say 10% will give $3, but that would make, 300,000 x $5 = 1,500,000. That's still more than none.

The danger is in the bosses and the higher level quests and if your using a mouse how would you NOT be clicking a lot. The game starts to get really hard around level 12(unless your a healer). There are more enemies to deal with and you can get swarmed pretty quickly. I'm trying not to sound like a dick in what I'm trying to say haha but what your saying is so silly to me. Your in the "beginner" part of the game and your complaining that it's too easy but then that it gets too hard because your playing solo.
Once you hit level 9 you can access your movement(speed, flight, acrobat) abilities. Once you hit 10, you get roles (Tank, Healer, Control) which affect the output of your abilities. Once you hit...around 12? you get access to Iconic Powers. It's around this time that you start unlocking quests types that are more intricate. There's events where you join a queue and get paired up with 3 others to do large scale missions, there are several waves of quests and a huge long winded boss fight. There is also wanted posters around the police stations that require you to hunt down and kill major super heroes; Bizzaro, Clayface, other big names. Every few levels you gain access to something new and it requires some thought and at least 1 other friend. Mindless "clicking" will get you nowhere.
This isn't a solo game.
I've played several MMO's and this game does many things right that I've never seen in any other MMO. The best being that there is no competition for quest rewards. It's open world so you just show up to an area and you might find the place overrun with other ppl doing the same quests. Normally you'd have to fight just to get the next spawn, but here you just join random people and you both get the rewards. If you just stand there, though, you won't get rewards. You have to help, so it's not something to be abused. Another thing I like is that there is no limit to draw distance; you don't have to be close to an object for it to be drawn on screen. You can see the headlights flickering of cars off in the horizon. Very few games do this and it adds a high level of realism to this world. It helps when your searching out tokens scattered about. Some of the quests that require multiple people have automated queues. You join a queue and wait for others to fill the queue. You can even do other things while your in queue. You can play a low cost of 500$ to reallocate your stat points to try different builds without starting a new character. There's a hub world(The Watchtower) with centralized warps to every HQ in each city.
There are just so many technical things about the game that make it so much more accessible than other MMO's. It's wideopen from the get-go and you'll have a dozen things to do any any one time.
I play it on PS3 and I can't imagine playing it with a mouse. I have 2 melee attack button with around 8 different "moves" and combos, most of which can be strung together. So I'm never just mashing a single button. Each move and combo has different dmg outputs and effects like launch/stun. There is reason to mix it up. Multitarget vs single target. Then theres the powers. Most of them act differently depending in your role, which you can switch at any time. Some of them have linking effects. Like my Ice powers, one move puts a Chilled status on enemies. Another move will cause their feet to freeze if they have Chilled status when you hit them. And another move will completely lock them in a block of Ice if you hit them when their feet are frozen. Some moves give you a status called...I forget, and when you apply this status 5 times in a row you gain Ice Armor status and your character appearance changes to be made of Ice. Many "jobs" have transformation abilities. These aren't utterly basic versions of spell/moves we've all seen before. It's not just damage1, damage2, damage3, AoE damage....
There seems to be a continuity issue in the fact that... I beat Scarecrow... therefore his mineons shouldn't still be on the street causing chaos.
Very few games do this. If you beat something and any related enemies/npc's were gone there might be complaints that it's too empty. Not to mention the fact that it's open world, it's not an instance just for you. The minions remain because fellow heroes need to complete the quests u.u and in cases where you do get an instance, it allows you to repeat the quest. Maybe you want to try and get the rare drop or you missed something for a sidequest. I don't really get this complaint.
Maybe I just really don't like MMOs. It feels more like this is a time killer and not entertainment or creative or productive. Like busy work. But maybe that's what MMOs are. I didn't really see any social component. I could chat... but no one was chatting even in an area with a bazillion heroes.
There are several reasons for the chat issues. This game is newly free to play so there is a huuuuuge influx of players who don't even see the chat window, can't read the text on ps3(non-HD tvs), and dont even know how to chat. Or just don't want to cause they don't have a keyboard on ps3. Or course the social component is there, there's friend lists, joining groups(parties), and even joining leagues(guilds). If you couldn't see even that, I can only conclude that you aren't really looking at this game. You downloaded it, glazed over it with no effort, and are passing it off as crap.
The massive influx of players also had other effects of game lag and logging in. The logging in part is fixed but they still need to increase capacity a bit to make it all smooth. It is improving, its just too bad some people got impatient and ragequit(not you Dude haha). There were some players that were paying for the game and posted on the facebook page that they are never going to play again. This day and age people expect servers and network connections to be 110% at all times. Things are only going to get worse as the planet becomes more and more over-populated and devices/games require more information to run but heaven forbid we as consumers have to pay more for the infastruture.... /rant
This game is a time killer just like playing GTA is a time killer. GTA is full of the "same old" fetch quests; follow this guy, kill these people, touch this spot then touch another spot. The narrative gives meaning to what you do. This game is full of narrative to give context to what you do. Every quest is directly related to a character from the DC universe and it's all very well done. Every quest line starts basic and has you completing justified objectives directly related to the story created around a villian/hero then ends with a boss fight against that villian/hero. After which you get a cutscene that is VERY WELL done. It's very satisfying and it's not some boring empty "busywork". It's very story driven and for fans of superheroes; it's extremely fun. You work along side the characters you know and love, some of the same voice actors too. Your not just collecting firewood for some shmuck in the woods. Your getting a quest from fucking Superman to take down Lex Luthor.
It doesn't feel like a superhero game so much as a MMO with superhero paint over it.
What is a superhero game, then?
I would think it's a game where you perform super human abilities like flying, running super fast, and picking up insanely heavy objects that you toss around like toys. Have abilities that mimic existing superheroes like green lanturn, batman, superman. Where if your one of the good guys, you perform duties of: saving people, stopping evil plans, and defeating your arch nemesis.
I don't see how this isn't a superhero game.
You can boil any game down it's bare bones and say "it's just stats, equipment, abilities and quests" and then say it's just like every other game that has stats, equips, abilities and quests. You say this is just another game, with superhero paint on it. In shaping every aspect of the game to mimic the world of superhero, it becomes a superhero game.
I have 2 characters at level 16 and I've only just begun to scratch the surface. It sounds to me like you don't like MMO's or games(?). If you can't get enjoyment out of doing "similar" things in a totally different universe, then it sounds like you don't like games. A game doesn't have to be totally ground-breaking to be good.
So, to anyone reading this; DCU is a great game, it's worth a try if you don't have any other MMO's on the go. If you need help getting into the game, I don't mind helping(no noobs).
