RPG MAKER CHALLENGE TOPIC
Posts
If you are like me, you find replaying an rpg maker game boring. So, I decided to create a challenge topic. Basically, play your way through the game, under specific restrictions, and post your progress on it. For example, I beat Paradise Blue with all characters at lv. 1 simply by avoiding encounters. Post any ideas you have for a challenge!
Potential Games for challenges (list prone to change.):
Alter A.I.L.A
Backstage
Bob's Big Adventure
Chrono Alter
Crystalis
Demon Legacy
Dhux's Star
Dragon Fantasy
Dragon Fantasy: Venaitura
Dragon Fantasy II
Everlong
Final Fantasy Dreams
Generica
Hellion
Hero's Realm
Jay's Journey
Onyx
Paradise Blue
Phantasia 3
Retro Quest
Rubi
The Blue Contestant
The Hole
The Tiamat Sacrament
Vermicide
Weird Dreams
Completed Game Challenges:
Paradise Blue Level One Game - arandomgamemaker
Generica Low Level Game - arandomgamemaker

You know, I thought about this (briefly) and concluded: your average RPG Maker game has a LOT less "challenge" potential than your average Final Fantasy.
I used to try and beat my own games as quickly as possible. Speed running RPGs takes a lot of planning and knowing exactly what's coming up and what you need in the future. Meanwhile my Rockman no Constance speed run attempts come down to 'how to beat the stage as quickly as possible while relying on known power ups with plans if I get random ones' and 'fuck you Wily fortress fuck yooooooooooooou'
Yeah, I was thinking shorter rm games or straightforward dungeon crawls. I was thinking just the other day as I played it that Rhyme's Sundown Project would make for a good speed run provided that you had completed the game once beforehand already.

Not really. Take Dragon Fantasy, for example. Its enemy AI patterns are pretty much instant death. Not to mention Bedbug in Paradise Blue.

Yes, speed runs also take strategy. I usually stick with Low Level/No Experience runs, however.
I'd say Demon Legacy was about equal in difficulty to the average FF game, although not quite as difficult as the earliest ones.

Yes...i would say so too.

It'd help if I'd played any of those games. More imporantly, I didn't mean "difficult" I meant "compatibility with the kind of challenge you're talking about". Anyway...

I'd say that Vermicide fairly well invites speedruns, if anyone feels like trying.
But not anywhere near as much as The Blue Contestant, a game seemingly designed with this kind of play in mind. And holy fuck it's awesome, by the way.
Backstage should be very interesting to speed run. I'd say we should attempt it and post our completion times.
(and btw my Crystalis is tailor-made for speed runs too)

That's a great idea, Avee! I'll be sure to keep an eye on that.
I'm currently at the final boss in my Dragon Fantasy LLG. (I beat her, but i have yet to upload it.)
I must say, 99% of my strategies in my run were luck based, unlike in Paradise Blue, where it is more strategy-oriented then luck based.
I'm thinking of restricting my Level One run further. Any thoughts on what to add?
You could restrict the use of certains abilities or items.
I haven't played many rm games here yet, maybe 15-20 so far, so I don't really know which ones could be good candidates for challenges. It would help if we could use this topic to list potential games, just suggesting ^^

We can do that too, but lets not forget the main focus of this topic is challenges/any progress in them. I suppose I can compile potential games in the first post. (or better yet, a list of completed rpg maker game challenges) I shall create lists for both of them shortly.
All done adding the rough draft of the lists. All completed challenges (with video proof) will be added to the completed challenge list. (Currently, only the two of mine.)
Hey, good work there. You can add my two game suggestions too.
I don't think that my computer is powerful enough to allow video recording of acceptable quality, but I could at least take screenshots of my progress regarding low level runs (sure they're less solid as proofs but better than nothing).

That works fine.

Seriously: The Blue Contestant.
Adding, geez. Anybody thought of any challenges yet? I'm thinking of doing a No Exp run in Dragon Fantasy II.
