WHAT DO I PUT IN MY CASTLE COURTYARD?

Hi guys,

I'm making a castle in Rm2k, but I have some open space left in the courtyard which I need to fill up. And I don't know with what, so I need ideas.

Things I already have:

- A training spot for soldiers to spar and practice
- Stables
- A fountain

I still have a good portion of space left and it just looks awkward, so it needs to be filled up.

Things I don't want:

- Inn
- Pub
- Equipment / item shops
- Civillian houses

I see this a lot in castles in RPG Maker games, but in my opinion it makes no sense to have shops in a castle courtyard where nobody is ever going to buy anything.

Ideas?

This isn't exactly as senseless as you make it out to be, which I'll elaborate in a moment:

- Equipment / item shops
It was commonplace for castles to host blacksmiths, armorers, fletchers, poleturners, masons, carpenters, and other such various craftsmen and merchants because the castle garrison needed such facilities for everyday operation. Plus, a castle doesn't have to bar normal civilians from entry (especially a castle in a world of your own creation); if a castle allowed ordinary people to come in and do business, then it'd make plenty of sense to host such workshops and markets in the courtyard.

I agree with you on the out-of-place-ness for ordinary houses and inns/pubs though, those are better situated outside the castle walls (the castle garrison can party in the castle itself, anyway!).

- Stables
- A fountain
Other things that come to mind are:
* An archery range.
* A jousting arena.
* Barracks and/or dorms for the castle garrison.
* Craftsmen's workshops which I mentioned above.
* A garden (and a garden maze?).
* A lake (to complement the garden?).
Those are pretty good ideas, thanks
You just put Rob in it. Seriously, perhaps a few NPCs to talk to?
Right, I'll just make a huge empty courtyard with nothing but brick floor and some NPC's aimlessly wandering around saying random crap.

Thanks for the tip.

If your advice is ignorant and dumb I don't need your help and you can save us both the time.

A garden maze is actually a pretty good idea, but I don't think I can make it large enough for it to be actually fun. So I guess I'll just stick to a decorative garden.
Actually, I wasn't implying that all you should put in there is NPCs saying random stuff. I felt that you could put them in there with OTHER THINGS. Anyway, sorry I made a joke before I gave the advice-it probably DID make me sound ignorant.

How about decorative arches and fountains? Foilage? Or perhaps some treasure. You could also try to size it down a bit. Hope I helped! No hard feelings, okay?
...Yeah I'm also sorry, I'm a bit short-tempered today. Thank you for the advice, I'll see what I can do with it.
