Intro
"Summer's Day" was developed Dim-J using RPG Maker MV and is meant to be a dark comedy game, but the game's overall execution is so poor that most of the jokes just end up falling flat since I'm too distracted by how bad the game is. Admittedly the developer admits this game's writing is absolutely awful and the game itself is a waste of your time.
Oh well, at least it's not as painful as trying to beat the moe version of Pokémon FireRed while not using any moves that deal direct damage. I've been slowly crushing my enemies through the use of moves like leech seed, poison powder, supersonic, and so on. And since I'm not doling out direct damage every battle tends to take at least five minutes. And I've had some fights last over fifteen minutes. Though I suppose I'm getting bit sidetracked here. All I'm trying to say is this game is nowhere near as painful as some of my other gaming experiences, but that isn't saying much since this game is still a chore to get through.
Story
You play as Niva a young girl living on her own whose phone is stolen by ants. You eventually set out on a quest to get it back and find yourself stumbling through various mazes and other nonsensical obstacles. I suppose the weird plot points about finding a dead body while trying to get your passport is meant to either be surreal or a joke about bureaucratic work being so boring it'll actually kill you.
Though after completing the game were presented with a surprise twist that everything we experienced in the game was the ramblings of a young child. A young child whose ideas are so off the wall that even the teacher had to ask what drugs he was on.
It's definitely a fair question. Though apparently this is pretty normal considering the teacher decided to pass the kids on the grounds it will get him out of his hair.
I suppose it's bad form to reveal the nature of the surprise twist, but considering the overall quality of this game. I really don't feel that bad about doing so.
Gameplay
You mostly walk around and interact with objects and people in order to advance the game. Though in one instance you'll need to avoid smelly teens on a bridge while trying to reach another town. And there is an optional dungeon maze you can solve as well as a mandatory one. Though the solution for the optional one is rather weird. And the reward for solving it is fairly insignificant. And the event this reward is suppose to be part of is bugged.
Graphics
The game relies entirely on the RTP for RPG Maker MV for it's visuals. So while the graphics are alright. They don't exactly pop either since anyone with enough time and patience can make a game with these assets if they own a copy of RPG Maker MV.
Mapping
A lot of the maps in this game are needlessly huge. While the game does make a meta joke about this by having a character mention how the inside of a building is much bigger than the outside. This is such an old, overplayed joke that it doesn't make the huge town maps that make finding anything needlessly difficult any better.
About the only upside I can offer about this aspect of the game is that there aren't that many maps considering it was only meant to take about 30 minutes to complete. So while the bad mapping is something you'll definitely notice. It could have been worse. After all, this could have been an epic length RPG with hundreds of bad maps instead of just a small handful.
Audio
Audio wise the game features some original music by Dim-J that I do happen to like for the most part. On the other hand, this music is being used in service of a game that's fundamentally awful. So while it does mean this game does have one thing going for it. It's nowhere near enough to save this project.
Bugs
There's an event where a clown walks out of the café in Cinammon Town if you interact with him, but instead of walking through the door he phases through a wall.
And there's a kid you can interact with and give the plastic sword you get for completing the optional dungeon to, but even if you choose to give him the plastic sword. It will remain in your inventory and the kid will continue to lament his lack of a plastic sword. Meaning you can activate this event endlessly.
Conclusion
"Summer's Day" is a really boring game in my opinion. Admittedly comedy is rather subjective, but a lot of the jokes found in this game have been done to death. So much so that RPG Maker XP probably has more life in it than some of the jokes found in this game. Add in needlessly large maps and default graphical assets and your left with a game with very little going for it. And while the music is a nice touch. It doesn't save this game from being an absolutely waste of your time. So my recommendation would be to skip this game unless your a gaming masochist.
