Hi people!
"Super Wholesome RPG" is a rpgmaker 2003 game made Agrimmora, also author of Super Jolly RPG, that is a sequel of this first adventure, being released now that I am writing this review (so I'll probably review it in the next weeks).
This can be defined as a comedy rpgmaker adventure game that will take you about one hour to complete that includes some classical rpgmaker battles, lots of strange characters and some weird quests.
The game starts with Shitstain, our pink haired protagonist waking up in his home on a cliff. He just wants to have a good time but unfortunately getting some potato chips will become a real quest since they're out of reach, and to be completed our hero needs the help of some friends to create a human tower and reach the chips! But enters Pissstain, Shitstain's arch-rival and takes them, so this leads to the final part of the game where the protagonists will have to save the world with the help of aun unlikely ally! EPIC!
Well, as long as I am allowed to save, I am happy!
Uhmmmm yeah! This is the plot of the game, that's a classic rpg with save points, fetch quests and rpgmaker battles. Our hero Shitstain has a single skill that lets him boost a friend's power (it's a buff!) and also every other party member will have just a single special ability, but do not worry because battle are for the most part pretty easy. The only issue it that you CANNOT run away once combat is initiate, but I can tolerate this since all encounters are of the touch kind and there are not those infinite and annoying random battles typical of too many rpgmaker game! Get ready to fight many different enemies from Mouse Guards (is that a reference to the comic Mouse Guard by David Petersen?), Tomb Raiders (now HERE I guess you can get the reference by yourself!), Feet Goblin, and other strange beings. Besides combat there are some really easy puzzles and lots of talking with quirky characters. That's it!
Oh and then there are the save points or better, there are the Saveys, that's a pun on the real Slim Shady (Eminem's song) since everyone claims to be the real one but there are so many of them (Slim Savey, Fish Savey, etc etc)! It's also a healing point and this is a good thing since healing items are scarce in this adventure.
Ok and now let's talk about the coolest part of the game: the aestetics! I mean, combat is ok, classical rpgmaker system, nothing new, humor and story is also ok, I mean it can be fun but humor is also subjective... but the custom graphics are original and well done, and this is something that cannot be denied! The setting is cartoonish and colorful, the charsets are cute, the enemy sprites are cool and all seems to come out from a comic book, well a really bizarre and surreal one for sure! The locations are ok, I mean mapping isn't what you can expect from a realistic game but there are some funny aspects like Shitstain's house half suspended over a chasm or the evil gnome room...
Music is ok, it's ripped from various sources and it's pretty good, appropriate to a comedy game, and you won't be surprised to learn that "The real Slim Shady" plays when you save the game.
RATS! I hate rats! And even worse, there are three rats and only two of us to ppose them!
Final Verdict
"Super Wholesome RPG" is a pretty cool and fun little game, that entertains the player for about an hour. Nothing new or particularly complex or original, just some mindless fun and humor. Don't expect a very long adventure, in any case this is still a very well made game, especially for what concerns the visual aspect and the use of custom cartoony sprites. If you want to play a simple humorous adventure... this is the right place, my friend!
