Final thoughts on an Epic Fail.

Well it has been almost a year since I gave up on my Epic Masterpiece. The remake is not happening as I barely made it past the first area. I'm leaving the old download up (maybe 5% complete) in hopes that others may learn from my failures as this project could very well stand the test of time as an object lesson on what not to do with your first game... Let's try to list these lessons.

-Spend at least a year playing around with the engine BEFORE you release anything to the public. I didn't know what a variable or a conditional branch was when I started this game!

-Your Massive Epic Plot is too fucking massive! Scale down your first few projects. If you come up with an great idea for a long game wait until you have a better grasp of the game-making process. Take notes and plan for you long game while you work and complete several shorter games.

-"I'll fix the graphics later". No you won't.

-Your jokes are not as funny as you think they are. Make a joke game or make a serious game don't try to mash the two together.

-When people offer criticism don't just brush them off as a bunch of assholes. Even assholes are right now and then.

-More game does not equal better game. I was actually intentionally slowing level progress in order to strench out the game. NEVER DO THIS

-Don't plan a game with major features you have no idea how to make. Again scale down your first few projects.

-Other people will not make your game for you. Suck it up princess.

And finally... When you realize your game sucks and you've painted yourself into a corner. STOP making it. It's time to move on to a new project.

Of course in my case that new project was Crystals of Kerdesh which turned out to be an even more epic fail but at least the whole CoK fustercluck was a learning experience.

Thoughts on the Characters. I'm planning to recycle many of the ideas of this game into the Elfquest series including the lead characters at some point. Notice I've stopped using the terms Drow and Half-Drow in Elfquest: Get the Shiny. I'm trying to ease away from D&D and towards something a little more original.

Kataline:
It's interesting that Kataline which I considered the Female Lead when I made this game has become the least important of the four starting characters. Kataline is probably the most Drow-like of the four and fitting her into the Elfquest World is going to take some thought.

Kell:
Kell the Tunnelrunner has become a bit of an archetype with Wooter simply being an older more mature version of Kell.

Zunni:
Zunni has slowly turned from absent minded ditz constantly high on mushrooms into one of my deepest and best thought out characters. She's also my favorite and I'm still using a picture of her as my avatar. I haven't had a chance to really develop her yet but I will get around to it at some point. Phoenix Mystics are also very important religious figures but I'll have to develop that thought more.

Rheen:
Rheen or 'Pinky 'started out a joke character. I mean he can take a bong hit at any point in the game ;) but again like Zunni he's become a more thought out character over time. Going from a limp wristed whiner to a thoughtful philosopher unafraid to face the world.

Gort:
Gort makes only a token appearance in the download but the idea of the rowdy Berserker-like Brave as a section of Half-Dark Elf society is now rather firmly in my work. Especially in contrast to the careful lonely courage of the Tunnelrunner.

Minor progress.

Ok I've started reworking everything in earnest. I've imported a huge number of skills from earlier cancelled games, started redoing the item database from scratch and I managed to find some non-RTP facesets for some of the characters. Still using the default battle animations as I'm too chickensh*t to try messing with any of them.

Story will remain basically the same although some of the dialog will be changed and a larger variety of enemies will be encountered, with a mix of scripted and random encounters. Scripted encounters being slightly more challenging than random ones.

I've added a couple of mildly funny screenshots and reconstruction-wise I'm about to start working on redoing the infamously badly mapped haunted house of 'Oh God My Eyes Hurt'. Wish me luck this second time around :P

Miscellaneous

Change of Heart; Change of Title.

Okay kids, let's try this again. After the amount of crap I've taken in the last few months I had been about to stop making games altogether but l reopened this game last night and decided that I would stop crying like a bitch, get off my ass and completely remake the game into something other people make actually enjoy playing.

I've also retitled the game. The old title Druman Action was a tongue-in-cheek reference to Ludwig von Mises' magnus opus Human Action and considering the amount magic mushroom related material involved I doubt that he would have appreciated the tribute. It's impossible to keep your political views out of your artwork anyway so there's no point trying to be over clever about dropping vague references and pushing one's world view with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the nuts. Game will now be less preachy.
The new title references a fallen civilization that inspires some of the characters and becomes more important as the story progresses.

The old download will remain up for a while so try not to get too excited, too early. I'll start replacing the screenshots as I get new material.

If anybody actually wants to help me with this game I could really use a playtester and maybe someone to help with selecting music since I have really bad taste.

Going on Hiatus.

I've changed this game status to Hiatus for the time being. The entire game will need to be heavily reworked if not completely redone. In particular I want to rework the healing and battle usable items. Resources are supposed to be scarce at least during early parts of the game. The random treasure system is a complete flop, the elements and skills need to be rethought and nest of all the jokes just aren't as funny as I hoped they would be.

However I've grown too attached to the characters to simply abandon the game altogether.

Added another chunk today.

Well I just uploaded another download and I plan to add a couple of screenshots as soon as I remember where they are.
Total gameplay is just under an hour now and this game is going to be stupidly epic if I get anywhere close to what I had in mind when I started it. I've done some minor skill and item adjustments and I took a few of the F-bombs out. I'm not too sure how much I can take out without really detracting from some of the characters (Kataline swears like your grandfather's drill sergeant) but I'll try to keep the truly vicious language it down to where it makes sense.

For the handful of you who downloaded the RSD9 Version and actually want to try this game again I left a saved game from right before the Plantation so you don''t have to all the way the first section.

RSD9 Download plus other three Characters

Well I managed to throw together a rather pathetic download at the last minute for RSD9.

Total game play is about 30mins and the demo ends just as the plot starts getting good :(

There is also a CHEAT I forgot to take out near the start of the 2nd area. It's a teleport square near a mushroom (yes check the mushrooms) that looks like a sewer grate. Don't step on it or you'll miss a bunch of crap.

Anyway if something in my life actually goes according to plan I should have a better download up in a couple of weeks.

That say here are the other three Major characters.

Zunni:
Race: Half Drow (Surfaceborn)

Class: Phoenix Mystic
A priest-like magician with strong fire element attacks and healing magic. Was trying to have a healing character who wasn't useless offensively. Phoenix Mystics are also important religiously to the Nomadic clans and a fairly unique part of Druman society.

Weapons: Knives, Light maces, staffs
Shield: Bracers
Armor: Light, Mystic
Magic: Fire, Healing and some Mystic

HP: Medium
MP: High
Attack: Medium
Def: Medium
Int: High
Agil: Medium
Increased Resistance to Fire

Zunni is a complicated character. On one hand she's easily the best educated of the playable characters on the other she's a bit of a ditz. Charming cheerful and naive Zunni has a great deal of difficulty fitting in with the others and dealing with the harshness of the world she lives in. However her powerful magic and specialized knowledge as a mushroom expert make her simply invaluable to the clan.

Kell:
Race: Half-Drow (believed to be Drow raised but refuses to talk about his past)

Class: Tunnelrunner
A very fast class representing a cross between an underground ranger and a rogue. Tunnelrunners are the eyes and ears of their clan.

Weapons: Axes, Bows, Kama, Early Light Maces.
Shield: Light
Armor: Light Medium
Magic: Earth, some illusion

HP:Medium-High
MP: Low
Attack: High
Def: Low
Int: Medium
Agil: Very High (fastest in game)

Kell serves as the chief scout of the clan. He is an unrepentant treasure hunter and will do nearly anything for a Krin. Whenever the clan needs to engage in smuggling or purchasing supplies Kell is usually Illian's first choice.

Rheen: (Pinky)
Race: Half Drow (Former Slave)

Class: 'Rastamage'
Rheen starts out somewhat as a joke character since is fairly weak in the early sections of the game but will gain some useful abilities later. He is basically a Stoner Mage and many of his spells are bad marijuana jokes. His other abilities are mainly condition altering spells, some healing abilities and one or two decent attack spells for the late game.

Weapons: Knives, Maces Lt and Heavy, Staff
Shields: Light, Bracers
Armor: Light Mystic
Magic: Healing Stat altering, stoner

Rheen doesn't know what to make of himself. He's shy, sexually awkward, and desperate to make himself useful to his new friends. Although clearly magically talented Rheen is struggling to find his powers as well as his way of life. The problem is that he's just not good at anything. He's strong enough to use a heavy mace but lacks melee skills, his magic can only seem to used in trivial things and he's becoming more and more aware of just how little he knows about the world.

Kinda stalled out a bit but meet Kataline.

Sorry guys I got stuck on the first major cutscene and I've been putting it off for about a month or so now.
It didn't help that real life got in the way either or that I started another attempted novel.

Anyway I've been playing around with the items and skills a bunch but that's beside the point...

Meet Kataline

Class: Bandita:
Race: Half-Drow (Drow Raised)
Weapons (Duel Wields): Daggers, Kamas (small hand sickles)
Armor: Light to Medium
Magic: Some Physical skills, some Leadership based abilities

Class Description: Kataline besides being one the female leads represents a fairly typical female druman. Her combat skills are very ninja-like with a high attack and agility, Magic is limited and defense is below average.

HP: Medium
MP: Med-Low
Attack: High
Def: Medium
Int: Med-Low
Agil: High (2nd highest in game)
Increased Resistance to Poison

Background: Kataline was born in a slave brothel and then sold to a minor house were she was raised as a slave soldier. She fled and turned bandit at the earliest opportunity. She soon linked up with Illian's group and proved herself to be an excellent soldier and a natural leader.

The no Drizzt clone pledge.

First of all I'd like to thank anybody who actually bothers to read this. Seriously, hi mom.

There are a couple things about my game and I'd like to say then in public so that I can't chicken out like a bitch later.

1:) There will be no Drizzt clones! Not even intentionally bad ones that die horrible deaths. Drizzt Do'Urden is a fascinating character when you FIRST encounter him but the anti-cliche quickly wears on you. I haven't played enough D&D to encounter the hated 'Drizzt Clone Syndrome' but many of you have so I won't bring back any bad memories.

No Good Drow. 2-3% that are Chaotic Neutral and that's (expletive deleted) pushing it.

2:) This is not simply a R.A Salvatore fan game. It goes without saying that any game that incorporates dark elves of any kind is going have to take Salvatore's work seriously but I'm not just blindly copying shit here.
The Drow in this game are actually closer those portrayed in The War of the Spider Queen series then the Dark Elf Trilogy and besides this game focuses on Half-Drow and I have an entire... well emerging culture for these people (or else I wouldn't have started this ridiculous project is the first place).

3:) I have pretty much no graphic or coding skillz. This much will become obvious should I actually get a download up. :P However I'm planning this game in a matter that makes best use of the skills I do have. Try to bear with me here I'm doing my damn best.

4:) There's a lot of drug humor in this game but I'll try to keep it under control and never use it in a way that's absolutely ridiculous. The major characters in this game are not a bunch of useless stoners but they do like to party (when they think it's safe.)

OK well that's it. I did a timed run through of what I do have done last night. Only took me twenty minutes of lame RTP adventuring but they haven't even got to the estate yet. I'll try to get an early alpha up once I have an hour's worth, probably three or four weeks irf all goes well .

Peace out.
