I've been saying I'd do something around promoting/using/making tutorials for RMVX for like forever and haven't gotten around to it...UNTIL NOW.

I am going to make a straightforward game in RMVX called "Trials & Tribulations" (lol T&T)(take THAT V&V!) and I will blog about my experience as an avid Rm2k3 user making the leap to RMVX. It should prove boring to read interesting! (I hope! (yeah right!))

This game will contain nothing fancy. This is going to be a beginner's project. I don't want to do anything overly complicated, advanced or intimidating. I am an absolute beginner with VX.

For those VX experts out there: I will reach out to you for help, but I intend to try things out on my own since that is the point of the project.

STORY ::..

The land of Xnyndril is in peril! The Dark Lord Voidius and his army of netherdemons is destroying the world! The kingdom's many attempts to slay the evil lord have failed, resulting in a dearth of suitable heroes. To the rescue are the Quirks, a motley band of heroes who have opted to pursue the more esoteric classes in their training.

CLASSES ::..
*a work-in-progress, subject to change.

I will reveal more about the classes and my plans for them as my ideas mature! Also, Dudesoft is making some wicked character art. This will eventually migrate to its own gamepage once more data is ready.

Beekeeper
Uses bees and bee-skills to fight, has honey for healing.

Facepuncher
Punches faces. Hard.

Guitaromancer
A wizard who plays guitar. He can build up power and unleash a killer riff.

Mad Hatter
Wearing different hats unlocks different abilities.

Pokerface
A clever mathamagician who uses numbers and probability to defeat his foes.

Larper
Pretends to be a hero. But he is really good at pretending.

Barkeep
Imbibes and provides various liquids for status effects.

Rouge
A rogue-of-questionable-gender. He (she?) is not above stealing, either.

Now, that's 8 classes BUT there is no definitive healer-type. Currently the Philanthropologist is the front-runner for that role (the study of the strong affinity or love for humans). Spiritual Healers and Pharmacomancers are also in the mix. I was also considering having Droids, because robots are cool.

Singing a different tune

Now that my Game Gale sideproject is (finally) finished I can get back to this one....although, the primary purpose of this project was to familiarize myself with VX...which the Game Gale project did for me....so.....what is the point of T&T?

Seriously.

Melody and T&T
Anywho, my experience and expertise with VX is still in the novice stage. that being said, Craze suggested that I take a gander at Yanfly's newfangled Melody Battle Engine. I figured - why not? It's not like I got anywhere with T&T before it went on hiatus. Now, I haven't looked at Melody AT ALL so I have no idea what is in store for me, but it can't be that bad, right? Right?

So, I resolve to take a look at Melody, see what it can do, and adapt my class designs to fit within its mold.

Story REDUX and Episodes
Since my life just seems to get busier and busier, I find myself with less time for makin gams. In an effort to mitigate this, I am strongly considering making T&T an episodic game. Each episode will be a story contained within the larger story arc - whatever that is (I haven't even decided that yet). I don't even have an overall plan yet, or even the number of episodes I plan on having. But I have vague ideas.

Anywho, the first episode will most likely be The Journal of the Crooked King and will revolve around a neighboring kingdom's King consorting with the Bad Guys, and your task will be to show him the light. At least, that's probably what I'll do.

Adopting an episodic format also opens the door to making T&T a chaingame, which was an idea I explored in an earlier blog. However, in that earlier blog it was argued that THIS IS VX TUTORIAL/KENTONA GAME... Maybe I can hybridize that and have someone else write and design an episode and I implement it. I dunno, I'm just shitballin' here. I just know that my free time is shrinking every day and I'm getting on in years.

welp.

*a case of the tribbles
8 classes is a fine number, but why not go crazy and make a whole bunch more a la FFV style? That game had 20! Maybe 20 is a bit excessive, and sure, maybe people wouldn't use every single one, but the added customization is awesome in games like this.
Gameprofile looking classy.
So, the 8 classes are set, but I was thinking of having certain prebuilt characters join you on specific quests. One would be a chest mimic named Chester who is tired of just hanging around the tower waiting for unsuspecting heroes. Another would be a Time Mage, who's skills would be based on the current time in Ruby's Time class. "Time Mage casts Current Time!" *does 837 damage* (since it is 8:37 PM). And some skill are unlocked depending n the day of the week.
Lol opportunists will be playing at noon and midnight. Cool idea, only works for a game like this.

The time mage sounds interesting, even though it isn't a character anyone would use often! I like the chest mimic idea too, you should make it that annoying type of chest that one shots for high damage then casts absorb spells until it has enough mp to do it again. (<~Golden Sun mimics sucked when playing through the game with a low level party.)
I have been aching to get back to work on this, but real life keeps getting in the way.

Anywho, I have been giving thought to the elements types in this game and would like some feedback. I don't play Pokeymans so I may have gotten some of the competing elements wrong, but here goes:

Elements:
Fire/Ice
Earth/Lighting
Holy/Dark
Air/Spirit
Physical/Poison
Surprise*

*special unblockable element

So, the gist is Fire would work well against Ice-type enemies, and vice versa. I didn't want to get into long convoluted chains of element weaknesses so I just took 2 elements and made then opposing. Thoughts?

Hexatona
JESEUS MIMLLION SPOLERS

The world is made up of four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. It's also wrong. There's a fifth element, and generally it's called Surprise.
Air vs. Spirit seems a little odd. Maybe cut that out since spirits could either be holy or dark while air could be lumped with lightning?

BTW, surprise is the best element type ever conceived for an RPG.

Nuclear element? Attack element? Nazi element? Go play Persona 2, son.
Pokerface
A character that dances around to electronic beats?

(A clever mathamagician who uses numbers and probability to defeat his foes.)

...That was my second guess.

I should get back to work on this...

T'would be sweet! I'm still down to compose more generic sounding RPG tracks for you if you'd like.

I support this.
Hello! I'm grown quite interested in your game, so I subscribed. Good luck with it. :)

Yes, hence why I subscribed so I'll be noticed when work returns. ;)
I still want to make this game...one day. Maybe in February...

I have also been pondering on 2 new classes, the Material Girl and the Character Assassin.
