Facepuncher

Punches Faces. Hard.

I was imaging the Facepuncher to be a slight variation on the standard Fighter-type build in common RPGs. The Facepuncher would exhibit great stat growth in strength and hit points, but lack intelligence and defense. Given the nature of this class, I thought he would be a good candidate to start my class design with. It will also serve as an example of how limited in scope I hope to make this game.

Part of the process of developing skills will involve looking at the collection KGC and YEZ scripts I have to catalogue what is possible and to give me ideas. For the Facepuncher, though, I was going to stick with default RMVX database abilities (for now at least!). I was thinking I would give him a selection of multi-strike skills like Random Double Punch and Quickstrike.

TYPE: Fighter
FRONT ROW COMBATANT
SKILLS
Haymaker - increased damage but random target
One Inch Punch - a weaker attack but has a Speed bonus
The Ol' One-Two - attacks twice
Fist to Groin Technique - stun and damage
Fist of Fury - attacks 3 random targets
Punch of Kill Everything - powerful attack all punch

I will also consider Drakonais's idea of having a limit break/increased damage/rage state when he gets hit a lot/has low HP.

Death Poke, Dragon Punch and Falcon Punch are also in consideration (with their exact effects undecided!).

WEAPONS & EQUIPMENT
Haven't really thought about it, but either Gloves or the standard fare of medieval weaponry, depending on how far I want to mimic the Fighter class

PERSONALITY
The Glory Seeker: People rise to heroism though the greed of fame as often as not. The desire for a One's name to be heard across the land is what drives this type of hero to surpass their peers. While driven by greed, this type of hero is often driven to do things that may seem selfish during his/her rise to fame.

Quick to anger and wants to solve all of his problems by punching. The facepuncher isn't exactly the sharpest spoon in the tree, either.

Thoughts?

I think it could do with some spicing up, maybe, but then again it's not like fighter-types are very flavorful in any game.

That is no excuse to not have spice!

If the Facepuncher has fun equipment (Alena), I think that it would work out fairly well. Maybe give it a charge self-buff, like 250% damage on the next turn?
You can really do a lot of things in VX so I do not know why you choose to give the character a whole ton of skills that the player will only use one or two of at end game.

Okay so I changed my mind after talking with karsu for a whole thirty seconds. This class sucks.

1) An enemy strong to physical attacks makes this character near-useless
2) It has no flavor
3) A whole two or three skills will be used by the end
4) EVERY SKILL is "deal physical damage"

Try status effects, guard breaks, some tanking skills, self-restoration, blind cures...
Probably because I am also designing for start game and mid game. Also, that post wasn't very helpful or informative!

EDIT:
Craze's was! And I have no idea what you are talking about. And isn't that why you have a party of heroes? (variation, etc..)

Hmmm okay, I am just going to quote a chunk of an AIM conversation Karsu and I had a few minutes ago.

kkkkarsu 9:11 pm
(9:11:17 PM): you can pretty much make 90% of the SMT skills in rm2k3
CrazeTex 9:11 pm
(9:11:40 PM): And make then 800% more easily in VX. =D
kkkkarsu 9:11 pm
(9:11:48 PM): yes
(9:11:53 PM): point is:
(9:12:02 PM): it's a game that uses a lot of simple skills effectively
CrazeTex 9:12 pm
(9:12:32 PM): Yes.
(9:12:51 PM): And the synergy can be
(9:12:55 PM): <chaos> orgasm
(9:13:09 PM): Even simple stuff like
(9:13:14 PM): OH HEY OHKO SKILLS THAT WORK
kkkkarsu 9:15 pm
(9:15:19 PM): yeah =p...
CrazeTex 9:15 pm
(9:15:37 PM): (Granted, DQVIII does that)
(9:16:01 PM): Healer gets, by default, heals, wind magic (only wind mage, period) and OHKO spells.
(9:16:16 PM): The OHKO spells work fairly well against not-undead/not-demon enemies.
(9:16:52 PM): This is DRAGON QUEST and oh hey look, Angelo is a varied character before he even thinks about specializing in one of five skill lines.

I'm still not sure what SMT is. Isn't that your game?

Also, this is a WIP! Compared to the Soldier or Fighter class of Dragon Warrior III, this guy is a skill-wreaking-havoc god!

Other options for him that I am bouncing around in my head is making him an "elemental" warrior, with Dragon Punch (fire) and Falcon Punck (wind) etc...

Shin Megami Tensei. My game is a play on that series. Read up on it sometime.

...Shin Megami Tensei, that is. Not Saga Mara Talon. Don't play mine.
Status breaks would go well with this kind of character* and if elements are wanted, why not do so with his equipment? Flame glove or Thunder claw. ^.^

You could also do a charge-like command with different effects like Cyan of FF6.

* things like Head Kick - drops intelligence/mag defence, Guard Breaker - drastic drop in defences, Fist to Groin^ Technique - stun and damage and so on.
^Love that movie.
But I feel like adding elemental attacks would take away from the raw physical nature of this class. Is there any way to code a cover ability (FFV)? Skills that become stronger the more damage he takes? Or some monk-type skills maybe? I really want one of his skills to be called "Punch Face."
Do you skill have the Missiongarde Facepunch skill list? Might be some ideas there that are much easier (and possible) to implement with scripts! (then again, that may exceed the whole 'first time RMVX that is nothing special, just learning the maker' theme of T&T)
Attack-only moves are boring! Self-buff abilities seem natural for a heavy-melee class like the facepuncher. Like a "Battle Cry" to raise everyone's ATK, or something like that (or likewise, a move that lower's the enemy DEF or AGI, you get the idea).

You could also include moves with disabling properties.. single-turn stuns, Paralysis, Sleep, or even an insta-KO.

You could get creative though! Maybe make him more gear dependent... I have a script that grants skills for what equipment your hero is wearing. So if you have an axe, you can have axe skills, or a fist weapon has fist skills, or armor with defensive skills, etc. Although I don't believe it is class dependent, which might interfere with what you're going for. though if you find someone handy with scripts, I doubt it'd be that difficult to modify in order to accommodate classes..

Of course I do! What kind of data-obsessive guy do you take me for?

IIRC, the idea behind the God Hand was that he would build up MP by using his lower skills which would eventually unlock the more powerful abilities. He'd start with 0 MP in every battle.

As for the facepuncher, I do agree with the idea of him being a raw physical fighter. That was kind of my intent from the get-go.

Haymaker - increased damage but random target
One Inch Punch - a weaker attack but has a Speed bonus
The Ol' One-Two - attacks twice
Fist to Groin Technique - stun and damage
Fist of Fury - attacks 3 random targets
Punch of Kill Everything - powerful attack all punch

That's a lot more interesting and varied! I might consider a weakened attack that bypasses resistance, so that he can deal some sort of damage to foes with a physical immunity.
Falcon Punch
Make it like the REAL Falcon Punch! You miss a turn, then do a powerful attack.
I am also looking for interesting quotes for him to spout off, ideally being a bastardization of a real quote or idiom, like:

"One small punch for man, one giant punch for mankind!"
"Got punch?"
"I ignore anything I can't drink or punch."
"The punch is mightier than the sword"
"I say when Life hands you lemons, you punch Life. In the face."
"How's this for a punch-line?" *punches face*
"I'm not prejudiced. I punch every one equally."
"He who punches first, punches last."/"He who punches, lasts."
"Fist. Meet face. Charmed, I'm sure."
"To punch or not to punch?"
"Who needs a sword when you've got a punch!"
"Why didn't you DODGE?"

Eh, I'm bad at this. ^.^
