The game is divided into short stories - each story has one main character and the player can add other party members at will. The presence of the main charater pushes the plot forward, the presence of other characters enable extra features of a given story/map not available otherwise. For example, if you have Eve in the party, she can ask her summoned creatures to e.g. open a cave, or fell a tree to make a brigde over a river. The stories eventually join into one main plot to follow through the rest of the game, but the idea is that there is no one main character.
There is a fixed number of enemies in a given story, but you can train your characters in Battle Arena (where you get prizes according to the number of enemies you've managed to defeat within a time limit), or by taking up an optional quest.
