Hello warriors and adventurers!
Welcome to Sword of Aegis, a 2007 RPG Maker XP game made by kcdog76 that unfortunately exists only as a demo. Unfortunately because not only it's unfinished, but it also would benefit some polishing.
The game starts with our hero, Spark, a young adventurer that recently graduated and... had a strange dream about a city in the clouds, and friends and... hey why Spark tells us all these things instead of showing a cutscene? Uhm it would have been more interesting. Also it would have been more interesting learning about Spark's sister since there is a cross outside his home and if (only IF) we inteact with it we'll learn that she was killed by a Monster. Yes, not a monster but a Monster!
Anyway, back to our hero Spark: he has to go to the Hero Academy and another graduate, a mage called Leila will accompany him in his travel to the big city, unfortunately in another corner of the earth evil still plagues the lands... but the worse has still to come and the game end before that part!
HOW DARE YOU!!!! So many typos in this game!
Concerning the gameplay itself there is not much to say, and not because it's a demo, but because it's a rather classical rpgmaker adventure game with a party of character (Spark alone in the beginning, that is later joined by Leila... but I'm pretty sure they were supposed to have more companions later!).
The game offers classical random battle encounters with the usual Rpgmaker XP system, bounder/crate pushing puzzles and some exploration. Nothing new, nothing special, and unfortunately battles are rather tedious, they start pretty easy but then become rather challenging if you do not grind. Sigh. Besides these random encounters the game has the obligatory boss, but spamming the most powerful moves (“secret attack move” and “Fire”) will let you win in few turns. The only part of this demo that was a bit strange is when Spark's father gives his last lesson: if you fail... it's instant game over! Uhm okkk!
Visually there is not a lot to say: the game is 90% Rtps except for some backgrounds and screens like the main menu and the game over. Mapping is... uhm ok for a first game, so it's pretty mediocre but to be honest some zones look unfinished, and given that this is a demo, it's pretty obvious that they were meant to be revised. Well, that's what I believe!
Aaaaand from what I wrote you can expect just a mediocre first chapter of a classic, boring and banal fantasy rpgmaker jrpg. Well YES, BUT there is more! The game is riddled with typos and in some cases these made the experience hilarious. And unnerving. At the same time! Oh yes. But uh ok it's a demo, isn't it?
Enemies includes the ever favourite mimic creature disguised as a chest!
Final Verdict
Sword of Aegis is a generic fantasy prologue made with RPG Maker XP, without anything that can make it distinguished from other games (banal story, mediocre combat, mediocre mapping), except for the bad spelling, but hey this is probably the first attempt to make a game. Unfortunately there isn't a lot that can make this demo stand out or make it interesting so I cannot really recommend it!
