This is an add-on to an earlier blog post.

Jean Sozora is getting a brand new battle sprite ~~~
The old one is just... creepy, PLUS and I'm increasing the size of all the battlers, so I couldn't keep it.
However, I really liked Jean's battle pose, so I decided to just... edit it a little bit more ~ xD

Jean Sozora's new Battle Sprite

Ugh. I hate drawing feet. And legs. So difficult. And I'm notoriously bad with shading, too.
Anyways, since I wanted it to be more than just a resprite of the old one, but I wanted to keep her arms-crossed-sneer, I flipped the way her body was facing. Didn't add the feet yet, either.

Do you think that the golden hairpin should have it's own palette? Is it too unnoticable? Do her legs look like sausages sticking out from under her dress as-is? Please tell me any suggestions that you have, however stupid they may seem, as I could definitely use the criticism. ^^

EDIT --

A little bit better? What do you think?

It's pretty clear you're referencing IaMP/SWR sprites, which is cool. But you're right; her legs do kind of look like sausages. Try extending them and thinning them out. I recommend looking at Sakuya's sprite as a reference for legs, since hers aren't concealed by a frilly dress :v

Actually really give Sakuya a look. She's doing a similar pose as well if I recall.

The IaMP/SWR spriters used mostly highlight on the leg and then add shadows in the edges/under the dress. Do the same thing with her legs as you have done with her arms.

I can't tell if you've ripped the palette for the dress because I'm not a total nerdy expert on the sprites ;P but for the top half of her dress I recommend adding more difference between darks/lights. Right now most of the shirt is shaded just white and it's not very appealing.

As for the shoes...she kind of looks like she's floating in space. You need to ground her a bit better and thin the legs down as they get to her shoes.
EDIT: reread your blog. Yeah, thinner legs. You do shoes quite well (was browsing your screenshots).

As for the clip, yeah, change the palette. You should only be using two or AT MAXIMUM three colours on it though. I'd say two.

Give adding another shade to her hair a thought. You've only got two colours while her skin has 4, her dress has four and her accessories have 3. Just a bright highlight should do it. It'll make her pop a bit more.

I'm not trying to tear your sprite to shreds or anything, just trying to give you constructive criticism. You're doing well so far. IaMP and SWR has beautiful sprites and it's a good place to start ^^

Did I not mention that I used Sakuya's sprite as a reference? Whoops. DX Yeah, I did rip a few palettes from her sprite. I just flipped the way her body was facing. I did copypasta Sakuya's legs onto Jean, but the perspective just wasn't right, so I couldn't use it DX

Didn't shade the blouse or dress to my liking yet ^^ As I said, I'm not good with shading ><;;

Didn't add shoes, either. I had tried to add them, but they didn't turn out very well, so I didn't include them in the screenshot. But Sasha's shoes turned out allright? Well, I might rip those off her and copy them onto Jean so I can edit them ^^

Hairpin was golden anyways. I didn't like having so many shades of yellow on it anyways, so thanks for making up my mind :D Thanks ^^

I will add about 2 more shades in her hair. I just wanted to get the basic colors right, then shade them later so I know what I'm supposed to shade. Thanks ^^

Don't feel bad about posting your comment, it was perfect :D I'm not one of those people who can't take criticism, especially when I ask for it in my blog xD
Thank you so much :D

And this doesn't mean the sprite's perfect now. If anybody has anything else they'd like to say, don't hold back~~~~
