Aetherion is a roleplaying game created in one month for the 2011 RMN Summer Games Competition. The contest’s theme was Surrealism.

What is it about?

The world of Aetherion is a strange place where dreams and reality are closely intertwined. The world is periodically threatened by Raythe, bizarre otherworldly entities that prey upon humanity’s weaknesses and fears. To protect the world from the threat of Raythe, the ARC Institute was founded, to study and protect against the Aether, the mysterious realm from which Raythe originate.

Take on the role of Edan, a new initiate at the ARC Institute, as he learns the secrets of the Aether and takes up his mission to protect the world from the looming nightmares that threaten it.

Dimensions of 2 or 3?

This is a question we've long been pondering, and we've done a prototyping on both sides of the spectrum.

I want to ditch RPG Maker because of resolution limitations more than anything else.
Krisanna (artist) wants to ditch it because she's not good at spriting; environments in particular.

So we started working in 3D, and we've gone through a lot of tests, iterations, and prototype games (BoutallesTogether, Death Wish, even Ginger) to make stronger and better tools and learn our limitations, capabilities, and tools.

After several iterations we came up a 3D model design we liked and built it so it animates well:

So why 3D for a hobby game? Because we don't want to keep it a hobby game. I'd like to Kickstart and eventually sell the project.

While I enjoy making games and can do it in my spare time for fun, for Krisanna this is work - and as such is mentally exhausting.

So we need to either making money on some of these projects or she has to get a part-time job to help deal with the medical bills and costs of finding a residence in the city we moved to for my job.

The best solution to us seemed to be to do a commercial project. An unpleasant decision for me.

Trying to Kickstart or sell an RPG Maker game just felt... childish? Inappropriate? But I've seen a lot of successful people using it - people who aren't making junk games (though there are plenty of those.) So maybe keeping it 2D and in RM is a possibility?

So the questions we're pondering and would like some input on:
1. Do you think RM is okay to use and go commercial with?
1. Should we go with 2D or 3D?

Got a good laugh out of listening to that podcast!

Thanks for your thoughts on the combat system in particular, hearing people's thoughts gives me some more direction.

We love to hear feedback and just know people are actually playing it.
This looks awesome!, downloading now
I loved this game, and am planning to do a review on it soon. I was absolutely crushed when I found out it ended so soon, but was comforted by your comments on continuing it.

It is a true gem, and I enjoyed every minute. I reccomended it to my friends and will continue to follow this game throughout its updates. Thank you.

Glad you enjoyed it!

The version you played was like a pilot game. The story is being reworked (specifics, but the same overall plot,) pacing of the levels and skill gains, and new features and feedback on the old are implemented.

The blog should be updated fairly regularly until the updates are done, we're really looking forward to the next version of this too (and especially the new content!)

Cool :) I'd also like to note that I personally liked gaining skills at such a pace. Perhaps in a much much longer game it would be too fast, but levelling up and getting new skills quickly kept characters interesting and customizable.
Can you please send me a link of where you found the "Awesome Sauce" the one which plays in the college I really like it :3
It's in the game folder if you want the music (it's un-encrypted.)

However, you won't find it elsewhere, it was made using MusicShake by our 5 year old son.
Is there an updated download with the mechanics updates available? Or perhaps you're looking for beta testers( :D )? Either way I can't wait to dig into whatever updates you've posted since the "pilot" version of the game.
There's not an updated version yet I'm afraid!

We're hard at work on revising and adding the next chapter to the story before we put up a new download, sorry!
We've been held up due to a drawing hand injury of mine. It won't be until the 16th that I can get back to work.

Totally happy there seems to be a lot of interest in this game~ Thanks guys. :3
Drawing hand injury? D: That must be awful. Hope you get better soon.
Any chance of us getting a possible release date or percentage of completion? The more info the better :)

edit: one more thing, will saves from the "pilot" be transferable? I've been wanting to do another play through since it's been ages since the last time i played (on a different computer too) but then if i do the entire beginning of the game will come of as tedious and annoying to me. (i hate replaying games when i already know all the story :( )

edit 2: watched the talents video again. i really can't wait to get my hands on those d: wishing you left each skill selected for a few seconds so i didn't have to pause as much though lol but it's no biggie... I'm also wishing that we could have seen alaria's talents too. though i think from the first 2 sets i can guess what a few of hers would be.

edit 3: also i was just thinking about that whole issue with needing to pause in battles, as it stands the game pauses if you press f1 or click out of the window right? personally, if some sort of lag time is needed maybe some sort of a focus mode could be used where it just slows down combat instead of stopping. i really liked the whole nonstop action end of the battles where you had to plan in advance and anticipate your enemies actions. it makes it feel more like a real battle instead of a turn based (which is sort of what it is now with the game pausing)

edit4: so i decided to do another play through... anyway after the whole debacle with the passport i went around to talk to everyone. Only problem was when i was done talking to the girl in the green dress she then decided to stop moving... right in the exact WORST spot for there to be an immovable object. between the lower right corner of the platform and that plant. Restarting the game now... it would have been interesting for there to be an additional exchange though for those unlucky few that get stuck in this position. maybe eden asks her to move and unknowingly offends her? just a little easter egg of sorts :P

edit 5:whats the max level for the pilot?

edit 6: just got done beating the final boss on insane... it was a lot easier then i thought it would be. total game time? 2 hours. I used a spirit build for Edan, a power build for Flynn and a debuff build for Alaria (I switched the unique items of Edan and Flynn) I spent the first 3-4 rounds buffing characters and then from there it took me another 4-5 rounds to actually kill the boss with all 3 people attacking. Its easy if you just ignore the phoenix aspect of the boss.
I wish I could give a good % completion right now - I don't plan to add any additional major features, but implementing all the points for talents has proven lengthy. : )

1. Saves from the pilot game will not be transferable - too many story changes and new systems that I can't just adapt in (but there will be enough new stuff to make it interesting, I promise!)

3. I agree, maybe I'll see if I can make the pause feature an option you can enable/disable and provide extra rewards for those in the active system.

4. Wow, didn't realize you could be trapped, I thought we found all 'corners' you could lock yourself in (Solitayre actually locked himself in one during testing I believe!)

5. There's no max, but by the time you get to the boss you should have all the skills.

6. The harder and easier difficulties didn't get their main addition - skills. Instead of just buffing stats by large amounts enemies are supposed to get additional skills unlocked, but I didn't get time to implement those. (I could have if I'd just REMEMBERED to do it before we launched it.)
Wait a minute... does that mean the difficulty rating on the different difficulty levels are EXACTLY the same? D:

Also, how's progress coming along? Good, bad, mediocre?

Mediocre.

And not exactly, they're a little tougher, but not very. : (
I don't suppose there's any sort of developers log in existence that we can look at. I have a strange fascination when it comes to seeing what gets done and when XD

Anaryu's been updating here, and I've been posting art stuff on my Tumblr, but there's so much other crap I post on there too that I wouldn't really call it a development blog.
i love the game:) but it was too short :( i finish the game only in 3hrs.
