Dev Blog: Mechanics Update 1 - 4th Level Skills

Welcome to part 1 of the Mechanics Updates, the first aspect of the Aetherion Plus project (ie. relaunching and more content!) I'll be covering all the completed mechanics and teasing some of the new features.
Level 3 skills are no push-overs; and they reset your attack bar to boot!
However, at some point in a game character's life, there comes a time when you need MOAR POWAH!
To realize your full potential, kick ass, or just chew bubble gum, if your fourth level skills aren't the answer, you're asking the wrong question!
Of course these skills don't come for free! Besides needing to build 6 attack levels, these skills leave your character in an Exhausted state. During the time it takes someone to recover, they stand, heads drooped, energy spent, taking double damage until their MP bar has cooled down.
4th Level Skills are focused on one aspect of a character, but usually are high-damage skills, allowing anyone the chance to shine, be it after a serious series of face-drubbings, or shielding the whole team and buffing them through the roof.
As an aside, you might notice that to help people appreciate the names and power of the skill before it's used, combat is paused whenever the skill window is open!

Pants have been jizzed. Though in all seriousness this is very exciting!
Edit: What? You mean Solitayre isn't in this game???

Looks badass. Too bad I can't not see Flynn as Soli now.
...god damn it, Craze
cannot unsee OTL
(Also this is looking rad, guys! Dis gon be gud <3)
Also itty bitty Flynn is auuughhh ;w; <3
Looks great! Very exciting. And thank you so, so much for the pause feature.
By the way, will it be possible to equip multiple skills of the same level at some point? Maybe as some special end-game bonus thing, once you start being flooded with skills you can't use?

I wouldn't see how to cleanly UI such a feature - I expect I won't be touching the 3 Attack/3 Support skills, however the rate at which you gain your skills is going to be a LOT slower, and there are other mechanics coming to help you focus your character in certain areas, so ideally you'll be building along a certain route of your choice and skill choices won't be too hard.
I see. I'm sure you'll be able to work something out.
By the way, now that we can have more than 3 energy points at a time, will third-level skills still reset the entire bar, or just consume three points?

It consumes them all, at least by default. There may be ways around this. : )
Also, I updated the video since the last one sucked.
Also by the way, I noticed that while Edan has a new sprite for his exhausted state, Flynn uses the same one as his KO'd sprite. Does this mean Flynn will get a different KO'd sprite? It did bother me a bit that he just kneels down while everyone else completely collapses... o_O
Out of interest.. I'm wondering about how the battlers were made. They don't look like pixel art so I'm guessing perhaps they were painted rather than pixelled?
Ah, I see! That sprite is kind of funny, it just looks so over-the-top. I just find the idea of Flynn purposefully arranging himself so formally in his last moments of consciousness (or making a spell for that purpose) inexplicably hilarious. :p As is the flower that seems to come out of nowhere.

They're hand drawn, then chopped into pieces. Then for each new pose the pose is drawn on top the default one, once that sketch looks good we arrange the pieces on it and mesh them with the sketch, then color.
It's not quite as much work as it sounds, but more than just several hours go into even the easy ones. : )

Yes, it's definitely the best unconscious graphic so far.

I draw them. It's not as complex as Anaryu makes it sound. lol We think of poses, then I use the basic standing pose of whoever I'm working on as a size template to make sure their limbs and that don't change size. I'm in the process of making a video of some, I can post when I finally get one together.
