Hello sheperds and sheeps!
Welcome to Shepherd's Call: Revenge of the Genie, a Rpgame 2000 (yes, 2000! Not Rm2k3) game made by Hades Fish (also author of Shadow Scythe: Warlord of the Forbidden Relics, another complete rpgmaker 2000 game that I will probably review in the future).
Shepherd's Call: Revenge of the Genie starts with our alter-ego protagonist, the Sheperd (no name given) arriving at the tower of the Genie. And he apparently wants revenge! Anyway we do not know why the Sheperd left his home to find the genie, but this will be explained as we progress the game through the use of flashbacks.
Ready? Let's go! The story begins!
The gameplay is rather simple: the Sheperd has to climb the tower, fighting monsters in random encounters and reching the Genie waiting for him on the top! Being a one-man party battles aren't extremely interesting, at least our hero has various attacks (like Fire Move or Ice Move) and abilities (like the Cure Move and the teleport, usable only outside of combat), clearly every enemies is weak to certain attacks, for example fire attacks are very effective against mummies. A valid stratedy is grinding, since with just one character and many battles, it can help a lot. Anyway WHY the save point is a hatched and log??? A real mystery...
The game has three endings: one is a bad ending... another is a sort of good ending with a "game over" and the last one is what I think can be called the perfect ending, but... it required doing something specific and still I do not think it's really satisfying even if I appreciate a good twist!
Concerning graphics, sounds and everyting else, the game is... 99% Rtps? Well aside from some piscures like the menu or the game over screen, ALL IS RTP AND THEY'RE NOT INCLUDED IN THE GAME. So I hope you have them somewhere!
For a sheperd this guy seems rather skilled in magical combat! I guess he trained a lot for this day!
Final Verdict
Shepherd's Call: Revenge of the Genie is a difficult game to judge: it's not a nice game or one that will show something really new, it's a classic RTP game with just one character (Enryuu, the martial artist rm2k database hero), classic rpgmaker combat (made boring by the use of only single hero, at least he has some cool skills!), boring maps, boring random encounters... but still there are some aspects, twist and story parts that are nice, but I'm pretty sure that this isn't a game that was supposed to be taken seriously! This is like a B-movie, but in the Rpgmaker gaming version. And FEW people can enjoy these niche movies, so it's ok if you will not like it, I think! And also IF you like it but hey... this is not a game for everyone for sure!!!
