UPRC reviews... "Don't Eat Soap!"
Imagine my surprise to stumble upon this little gem while searching for a game to check out. Don't Eat Soap! is a platformer made in the OHRRPGCE engine by a good fellow named James Paige and is promoted as an educational game. This is because the game is about, well, not eating soap.
The objective of this dandy little game will be very familiar to many due to a long list of similarities to Bubble Bobble. There are so many striking similarities that, if James ever decided to sell this game, I would worry that he would be hit with a lawsuit!
Players control Bob the Hamster who has a mouth full of soap that he foolishly ingested and it is up to the player to help Bob get it out of his mouth by blowing bubbles to trap evil germs! When Bob successfully traps a germ inside of a bubble, a simple nudge will transform the restrained baddie into a tasty treat in the form of a carrot. Yum! Anyhow, the objective of each platform-based stage is to trap all enemies and turn every single one of them into a delicious healthy vegetable for Bob to consume.
The controls are very responsive and slick in this little title. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Bob responded to my inputs quite sharply, and his movements were very fluid. James Paige did a great job with the controls and gameplay flow. The only issue I've had is that sometimes it is a little difficult to burst bubbles with enemies inside of them. All too often I'll find that, instead of bursting the bubbles, I instead push them higher and higher! Fortunately there's always higher ground to seek so the evasive bubbles that are afraid to be burst are only a minor nuisance.
I really like the visuals. They're extremely basic and reminiscent of sprites from early Nintendo games. It's a little hard to tell what some of the enemies are, but that's fine since I just assumed that they are all germs. There's nothing terribly outstanding in the game since it is meant to look incredibly basic, but this isn't a bad thing. It really does work in the game's favour.
There's a two player feature in Don't eat Soap!, but I don't think many people will be pulling many friends, roommates, or siblings over to the keyboard to play with them. However, since this is promoted as an educational game, I think that this might be a fun experience for RMN's moms and dads to have with their young children. After all, it carries a strong message... Don't eat soap!
This is a very simplistic platformer, so I can't write much more than this. Overall? This is a fun little game, especially if you're a fan of Bubble Bobble or have little children under your roof. Download it and give it a try!
