Status and future of Project Maiko

Hey all, dunno how many people are going to read this, but I may as well talk about the status of this project. Project Maiko, as an RPGMaker game, has been abandoned. However, the game concept itself has changed. I am now working on making it with Unity, and rather than being a straight up horror puzzle game, it's going to be a first person stealth game in the vein of Thief: The Dark Project. I plan to maintain the story and atmosphere for the most part, but the gameplay will be different than what would have been in the RPG Maker game. I don't know when it will be done as classes take up a lot of my energy, but if there are still people following this on here, I will post a follow up blog to a site where you can follow progress once I get that set up.

I do have a super early playable alpha showing off early game mechanics. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/82697357/Stealth%20Game/SuperEarly.html

Progress Report

Teaser trailer! :D You like trailers, right? :3 Oh and a small progress report.

Yes I know, once again I apologize for such a long absence. I hoped to get more work done but, sadly, the Spring semester ate up a lot of my time and energy. While I did get over my writer's block, I still didn't have much time or energy, as already stated, to dedicate to working on this game, and with something like this I want to do it when I have the energy because I want this to really turn out well. I'm learning a lot of things along the way, and no doubt will still have a lot to learn even when I'm done. But, it's all a learning experience. I knew this was an ambitious project (no pun intended) from the start, and maybe I was in over my head a bit, but, I decided what the hell and give it a shot anyway!

I thank everyone who has been following this game and has been patient with me. I can only hope it lives up to your expectations when it finally comes out!

In the mean time, here is a little teaser! :D

Miscellaneous

On my unannounced haitus

I realized it's been months since I've said anything about this game, and that's because it's been months since I've even touched it. The semester just took up so much of my time and creative energy that I just couldn't do any real work on Maiko. I still hope to get this game made one day, and since I have free time again for a while I may just start work on it again soon (unless the Steam sale has anything to say about that >.>)

I admit I would like to know though if there is still real interest in the game. Just to help give me motivation.

Progress Report

Progress report. Sorta.

Making a blog to assure people that I still am doing work on Maiko. Though, suffice to say, it won't be released as soon as I'd originally hoped. Since my semester started I haven't had much time or mental capacity to really do serious work on the game, the later of which I need because I want to do the story right, as well as the puzzles.

No idea when it will be done, but I wanted to assure people I still intend to see it through. Thanks to everyone who is still interested in the game!

Miscellaneous

Main Menu Sample.

Haven't uploaded anything on the game in a while soooo, I figured I'd share a taste by showing you the main menu. YAY! Script is by Moghunter. As for the song, it was made for me years ago for something else I made but I cannot remember who did it. If by chance you see this and recognize it please let me know so I can give proper credit!

Progress Report

Progress is still being made!

Just letting the (few) people who are following this game know that I am still working on it! I still have a fair bit to do, though the biggest obstacle is of course the occasional walls of writers block I keep running into. I do have the general story all planned out, there's just some bits in between that I still have to work out. Never the less, I still plan to make this game finished at the very latest before the summers out!

Stay tuned.

Fixed the audio samples so you can... actually hear them >.>

Yeeeeeah, pretty much a fail on my part XD I set them to private without realizing that it doesn't mean you can give access to those with a direct link. I got a little careless and I have no one to blame but myself for being so derpy :I Oh well, here are the links again.

So I heard u liek audio samples

To give a taste of the atmosphere I'm looking to create, here is a few audio samples from the game. The actual volume and even picture will likely vary in the game, but I guess you could call these the "raw" audio x) Though they won't be this loud in the actual game.

FAQ? FAQ. + Screenshot dump :D

What kind of game is this?
It's a puzzle adventure game with horror elements to it. There will be no battles in it, however there will be sequences where you have to flee from something.

So it's like Ao Oni?
In a sense, yes. I won't pretend there isn't inspiration from Ao Oni in this. However, there will be key differences between the two, mostly in regards to the story.

What kind of horror is this exactly?
It's going for a surreal kind of horror. There is some strange imagery to it but I'd say most of the horror actually comes from the audio design. Let's just say I've been having a lot of fun playing around with sounds in Goldwave and Audacity >;D Over all though, I'd liken it more to having the feeling of a strange nightmare, rather than it being a creature feature of sorts.

Is there a reason for the visual style or are you just trying to be artsy and pretentious?
There is a reason for it. I won't say what though :3

What is the story of this game?
As I've said before I don't want to reveal a lot about the story. I will reveal that it takes place in a person's mind, and in case your wondering no this will not be a rip off of Inception, so there won't be any kind of limbo. It is going to be fairly ambiguous though and open to interpretation. I do have a "correct interpretation", but what I really want is something that people can come to their own conclusions on, and when they do I'd absolutely love to see what people come up with :D

How long will this game be?
Way too early to tell now, but like any puzzle game it mostly depends on how quickly you figure out the puzzles. I'm sure it will be quite possible to finish the game in around 10-15 minutes if you know exactly what to do.

How hard will the puzzles be?
I'm trying to not make the puzzles too difficult. To this end I've been beta testing quite a bit and watching how well people are able to figure it out, and will continue to do so as I move along in development.

When will this be released?
Sometime in late July is what I'd guess, but any number of factors can change that.

When will you make the profile page look better?
When I remember CSS more D:

Some actual information on the game! Plus a progress report

Okay so I figured I would actually divulge some information as to what the game is actually about. I emphasize some because I do not want to reveal a lot about the story to people before they play it, but here is the basic synopsis.

In the game, you play as a woman in her early 20s named Maiko. The entire game takes place within her mind, and as you play through it you are going through her memories. As you piece her memories together, you slowly learn just how troubled this young woman really is.

And that is all I will reveal about the story. The story itself will be fairly ambiguous and open to interpretation. It won't be super vague, and there is going to be a correct interpretation of all that happens, but I likely won't ever reveal it.

The game, as the genre listing suggests, is a puzzle adventure with elements of survival horror. It is aiming to be scary, though not quite in the traditional sense so to speak. That is to say, no zombies running at you. Instead it's trying for a more surreal kind of horror. This is also a game that puts a major emphasis on note taking. There will be journals read that contain major clues hidden within them, so pay close attention to what is read. I am trying to avoid, however, making puzzles overly difficult. Trying to avoid moon logic (or Sierra logic, for all the old school adventure gamers out there) as much as possible.

As for my progress, I've spent a fair bit of the past week getting the first part done and finished, adding just a few last touches before moving onto the next. I've gotten several people who are willing to help me beta test (Which is good because I want to beta test the hell out of this game. I'm going to be like Valve with beta testing), as well as some help with art and story.

Stay tuned for more information on the game as it's made! The projected release time is still sometime in July, but it's too early still to make any promises. Who knows though, maybe it will be released before July. We shall see!
