Progress Report

Reality Check for COH

First of all, sorry for the lack of updates. I've been doing a lot over the last few months- Moving house, new job (a teacher in a high school- stressful stuff), not to mention waiting for my wife to give birth to child number two in the family.

But in all the time that I haven't been working on this game, I have had the opportunity to think long and hard about what kind of game I want this to be.

There have been some hard decisions being made, but I think they're neccessary if I ever want to produce a game worth its salt.

Firstly, the CMS will not be in the demo, and may not be in the final game. I'm sorry to people who were attracted to the menu, but if you saw the eventing, you would realise that it's just a big, clunky mess. The DMS may end up being the way I go for the rest of the title.

Other than that, I've given the demo it's first full playthrough. Suffice to say: oh boy! we gotta long way to go.

Thanks to those who have been following this game's progress, you have given me plenty of motivation to continue creating, and hopefully, something great will come your way soon.

Testing, testing...

Hi all,

Well, I've leaned something over these past few weeks.

Testing can be a cow.

This is testing.

I'm about halfway through my first test-play. At the moment my major concern is making sure all systems work (at the moment, they don't.) Slogging along, slogging along.

In other news, I've begun work on a side-project (y'know, for when I get sick of banging my head against the wall that is COH's custom menu) called Newchurch City. It's a superhero action game featuring superheroes of my own making.

Hopefully, the game will work much like a comic: Every now and again I'll release a new "Issue" of the game that you can transfer your save file into. The first few issues will each feature a new hero and story.

What do you think of the idea?

First Boss complete!

After much slowness, I've finished the first boss of COH. Now I'm on to test playing, fixing the menu, and then you should finally have a complete demo up for download.

If I can get everything done on time, I'm hoping I can put this game up as part of "Release Something Weekend."

Expect a lot more screenshots of the game coming up.

Game Design

Gameplay revamp

For the longest time, I had always planned for the control layout to work a little bit like this.

1 key: Main weapon
2 key: Secondary item 1
3 key: Secondary item 2
Shit key: toggle between characters
Z: Interact with environment

I did this hopefully to do a couple of things- firstly, I wanted you to have a variety of weapons at your disposal. Secondly, I wanted to use something other than Z for the attack key- it seemed weird that you would attack a civilian and then have them talk to you about what you can do at a shop.

What I found out about this method was that it's awkward as all hell. If you're plunged suddenly into battle (which you will be occasion) you have to go from one set of keys to the other.

Not a good idea.

So I'm changing things around a bit; making the keys a bit more user friendly.

You'll find out more when I release the demo (hopefully not too long now).

Miscellaneous

Something to look at

So I realise there isn't much going on here lately. That's mostly my fault- with the christmas period approaching and me trying to find a job, there hasn't been much time to work on COH.

However, to slate your thirst, I thought that I would share with you a couple of conceptual versions of Juan Kargon:

The middle one I've reduced to what roughly looks like a GBC version. The one on the right is made using a pokemon sprite as a base.

Hope you enjoy.

When mistakes result in extra gameplay

I'm about halfway through eventing the first dungeon. I evented a massive mini-boss before I realised that this would make a better actual boss.

As such, I'm now incorporating optional bosses into the mix. I'm figuring about three.

In the meantime, I have now given Volk bombs for use in the game. They will be needed for both the new mini-boss and the actual first boss of the demo.

That is all.

Eliminating distractions

Development on this game has been slow for a while. Because I test-play so often, I've found myself in a situation where I've got caught up on glitches.

So here's the plan, I'm just gonna finish all the maps I need to finish and then test the whole damn thing for glitches. This will likely mean that when I test play, the whole game will be mostly a buggy mess, but that way I can get all my content in.

I'm also putting my side projects to bed for a while (including a Pokemon rip off). So hopefully you will get a demo by the end of this winter (summer if you live in the southern hemisphere).

In the meantime, what are some of the best action game puzzles you've ever encountered?

Progress Report

I got 99 problems but a glitch ain't one.

... At least, it won't be.

I'm a meticulous test-player, so I'm hoping when I release my first demo you won't see much that doesn't work.

I've just uploaded a new picture of one of the non-Juan characters in COH- Volk.

Look at the images tab for more.

Not dead, resting.

I realize it's been a long time since I posted here. I'm just posting to say that this game has not been given up on.
What HAS happened is that I'm incredibly busy at this stage. So you will expect to hear precious little from me for a while.

I am still trying to sort out a couple of bugs before I introduce Volk to you guys, but hopefully you won't be disappointed.

Oh, and the name thing. After saying I couldn't think of a way to work "Company of Hearts" into the story line, I... worked it into the story line.

Name unchanged.

Announcement

What's in a name?

Quite a lot actually.

As much as shakespeare would hate it, a rose actually would smell less sweet if it were called "poo-weed".

To be totally honest, I'm not happy with COH's title. I feel like it's now a special group I have to reference in the game's story. I want to have a name that doesn't demand that my story goes in a particular direction.

So I'm suggesting a name to you; What would you think of the title "End of Epics"?

If there's no trouble with it, I'll change the title within the week.
