Good day
This time I am reviewing 'Heroes' and 'Demons', a work of TheRealDMac about heroes and demons (doh!). This game was made for an event and consists of an intro, a battle (well, two to be honest) and an ending. That's all that you can expect from this game, really.
Ok, but first, some details about the plot: in 'Heroes' and 'Demons' we are the Demons, since we follow the adventure of the (evil) Demon King that has to defeat those four heroes that arte ravaging his lands. But uhm, ok, looks like that these guys gained so many levels that not even an army can hope to win against them.
So, what can the Demon King do? Well, simply ask for help from his most trusted warriors to join him and travel through time to the past, when the four heroes weren't overpowered!
I hate when this happens!
So this is what happens during the game, and mind that there is no exploration, just dialogues and cutscenes, and when we'll get control of our antihero it will be to fight. Unfortunately there is no option to save, and that's a pity since if we lose the final battle we'll have to restart from the beginning!
The battle against the heroes is quite simple, in theory: our characters have different abilities, from special attacks to buffs and debuffs, and for the enemies, it's the same, it's a four heroes against four demons. And no, you have no other helps, just a good strategy may let the bad guys win, and this means concentrating the attacks on some enemies first (kill the healer first, and the tank last, the nice thing is that this is also mentioned in a cutscene, anyway you have to put it into practice!). If you lose it's game over, and if you win you get to see the ending. That's all!
The game uses standard RPG Maker VX Ace assets, and while mapping is probably better than some other more serious and complex games I played, there is no exploration or interaction, and it also look ultra generic, but this is the idea of the game, simply because it's a parody: the heroes are obsessed to get all the achievements and do not consider the npcs as living beings... because they ARE players (rather than real heroes) of an rpg! The game has in fact many jokes on typical rpg and videogame cliches, and this 'Heroes' and 'Demons' is obviously a love letter to the rpg genre and games.
It's the final battle! I hope you will win!
Final Verdict
I think there isn't a lot more to say about 'Heroes' and 'Demons'. It was a game made in a very short time for a contest with rather strict rules, so it's not a game you can play for hours, in five minutes you will probably see (and play) all the game. There are no secret, extras, different endings... nope! All is linear, but the purpose was to make a game for a jam and the final result is solid and well thought out. So yes, another nice little but enjoyable and humorous adventure, maybe the shortest I played!
