Developer Blog #2: Mining, Cameras, and the infamous HUD

RIP: Infinity IV's HUD.

Hello everyone, I have some exciting news to share!

Infinity IV is expanding it's ways for players to make in-game cash. For those that don't want to bother with many battles or quests, before you could live the quiet life of fishing, farming, and maybe hunting (and sometimes looting). But now you can add another trade to that list: mining.

Now players will be able to enter the mine, and mine for raw gold, bronze, and silver. The raw materials all can be sold for "currency" gold. Here's a look at the new system in action.

Players need to buy a particular axe for each material. And once they have it, they can mine away (with a chance system, of course)!

Along with mining, I'm proud to announce that a new, smoother and more realistic "gliding" camera system is being tested, along with a battle camera system and battle system with animated characters. This all adds up to making big technical improvements from Infinity 3.

And as a new neat aspect of the game, players will also be able to access an in-game cellphone via the menu. What that phone will actually do, will be revealed later. But expect similar functionality to the PCs of Infinity 1 & 2. Here's a teaser.

And unfortunately, I have to end this blog post with some slightly bad news. News that many of you, might actually be thrilled to hear of. The Infinity IV HUD, is dead. After showing up behind messages boxes, looking a bit too fat, and now interfering with the mining script.. it was time to go. And no, I won't be replacing it. There isn't much of a need for one. Everything can be found in the menu, and it will present a cleaner look than Infinity 3 had, without a massive HUD taking up all the screenspace. A gold counter *might* be in the future, but I also used that briefly for Infinity 3, and I'm not a fan of reusing many scripts. In the end, Infinity IV is not a game about stat-crunching and mana bars. It's about mini-stories, exploring every nook and cranny, finding every little treat, and living a virtual life of your choosing.

Anyway, that's all for now. Hope you like the news! And later this year.. let's get mining!

Ok first of all, yay for the HUD, sorry I'm not a fan but you knew that.

Now the mining, is the top axe going to be able to mine all three or will you need a bronze, silver and gold axe in your inventory in order to mine all three? I'm assuming you're not going to use real world information here, because well you can't mine bronze, it's an alloy, you have to smelt it, and silver is harder than gold and bronze being an alloy of Copper & Tin is harder than both so the hardest axe would be the bronze one.

You'll need all three to mine them all. And of course it's not going to be realistic, since the game does kinda take place in a fantasy realm of sorts. It's never made clear where exactly the series takes place, but it's definitely in it's own reality.
Awesome new update.

I still cannot wait to try the game
Good news about the somewhat cluttered HUD going away, I think. I've played Infinity 3 for a good amount of time and I never liked it (the HUD). Will you also be thinking of applying a custom font this time? I dare say the bland fixed-width default has already served its purpose for the series at this point.
