Hello adventurers, vampire hunters and players!
I'm back with another game, made with RPG Maker VX Ace for the 2016 swap in the middle event, and this time the same id "Bloody..." by Unity (first half) and Ocean (second half). Uhm very interesting!
Bloody... is a 35/40 minutes short adventure game about vampire hunters and vampires. But there are also other quirky characters like the Mimic Merchant (that's genius!)
Yes, it looks like a chest, but it's a mimic, it's friendly and helpful... for a price!
The plot is pretty simple and straight to the point: the Marquis Bachman is a dangerous creature of the night that has kidnapped a girl that is the girlfriend of Reynard, a member of a family of vampire hunters. But our protagonist is not alone in his quest, because three other characters are going to join him in his journey: Carmelita, a half-vampire (a... dhampir?), Blaine the priest and Michelle, a druid, marksman and monster hunter.
As you can expect this is going to be a horror party-based rpg with a team of heroes, vampire slayers fighting every kind of creature from hungry ghosts to giant spiders. Combat uses the classic RPG Maker VX Ace, and I admit that later it becomes pretty easy due to characters becoming extremely powerful (especially Carmelita), but this doesn't make the game less fun, on the contrary some of them have really cool special abilities (especially Michelle).
Get ready to fight every sort of monster in furious battles...
Graphically the game uses some classic RPG Maker VX Ace assets, but there are also edits and the really nice custom portraits made by JosephSeraph are really excellent.
Mapping is... adequate. Pretty simple but it's not really bad, in any case that's not the best aspect or the most important part of the game (I fear that the unassuming appearance may suggest that this is an average/boring game, but this is not the case at all), and for an event game made in a very little time, it's pretty much adequate. I just did not like some of the effects used and I found some locations a bit too simple.
On the other hand I liked the monster selection and the battle backgrounds, they are sufficiently varied, creepy and dark! I also liked the sounds and music used in this game, especially for the battle themes. Well done!
Overall combat is pretty easy because enemies are always visible and easily avoided (they do not seems to actively pursue the party, they will just stumble in our heroes), moreover there are some green torches that can be used as healing points to restore party at no cost... meaning that you can exploit them to spare the money needed for the consumables and spend them for the equipment! Aside for this it's pretty balanced, characters and opponents have many varied skills and that's always a good thing.
Uuuuuuhm this place is SO creepy! Let's end this review now and go home!
Final Verdict
Despite the harsh limits of the event, and being made by two halves created by two different developers, this is one of the best swap in the middle game I played, really. Short but pretty cool, really inspired and with some nice touches and details that surprised me. In the end this was a cute little horror game.
