Sacred Reviews: Nightmare

Introduction

Nightmare is a short turn-based RPG created by Gredge109 using RPG Maker MV and is built around the concept of the number nine. An idea given to him by a discussion one on of the forum threads on this site that I don't follow. Though, in all honesty I have to wonder if the concept for the challenge was influenced around the title of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. Regardless, the real question is if this short game that was crafted in a meager nine hours is any good. And, I'd like to start by discussing the worst aspect of this game in my opinion.

Story

In order to save on time I've decided to skip over how weird the plot of this game is and instead focus on why I hate this aspect of the game the most. And, that is because you don't really feel like you accomplish anything when you beat the final boss since your basically told you'll never be able to escape the nightmare you find yourself in. So, it ultimately doesn't matter whether you fight against the monsters within your dreams or simply ignore them and curl up in your cabin and hide underneath the covers.

Gameplay

Nightmare is a rather standard turn-based RPG with the only real standout points being that the player regenerates 10 percent of their MP every time they guard and that their is only one playable character. Sadly, both of these aspects act as a double-edged sword in my opinion. In the case, of the first issue it can slow combat to a crawl as the player burns turns in order to restore their MP in order to cast healing spells on themselves. In the case of the second issue it means the game is a bit lacking in terms of strategy since you can't pull off any combo attacks with other members in your party.

On the plus side, the lack of other party members does make the game a bit more challenging and the slow restoration of MP does fit well into my own personal style considering my approach to 7th Dragon for the Nintendo DS.

Graphics & Sound

In terms of visuals and sound the game appears to rely on the RTP for RPG Maker MV which isn't that surprising I suppose considering the short length of time that Gredge109 had to develop this game, but at the same time it is a bit disappointing since this game doesn't have any sort of unique flare of its own. On the bright side the resources on display were used competently. So there isn't that much to complain about.

Conclusion

Despite all of the limitations the developer imposed upon himself by building the game around the concept of the number nine. What really kills this game in my opinion is the ending. If it wasn't for that I could least recommend this game as a decent way to pass 60 minutes. As it is I'd suggest giving this game a pass and taking a look at Revenge of the Fallen a game created by Gredge109 and Ratty524 as part of the Swap in the Middle with You event.

Thank you for your honest review. This is a project I'll definitely be learning from. Also, I appreciate the plug for Revenge of the Fallen at the end!
