Overlooked hidden gem.

Story

BGFT - James Lucas Story is a game about a guy named James "Ick" Lucas who wants to find and beat Bigfoot. In a world where Bigfoot is the most important thing ever, with Bigfoot hunters being the elite few and even Bigfoot droppings being used as currency this is clearly a high ranking task. His assistant is his girlfriend Gloria, who he loves dearly. That's about all I can explain because telling anything more, would make you think I'm just making things up; it gets weird and it gets weird fast.

The game world is crazy and it may take a moment to adapt to the mindset, however when you do everything starts to make sense. It never does in a real way but in the special game's own world, all things fall in place. There are many laughs to be had within the game and the game's humor and insane world really sets it apart from the majority of the games.

The plot takes a plunder near the end and the game ends on a somewhat odd note, somewhat a mix of a cliffhanger and a copout. Not spoiling it but considering the game somehow managed to involve time traveling and gods and The Room references and still the ending didn't make sense, speaks somewhat of how jumping the shark moment it is.

Gameplay

The combat is aside the final fight of the game very boring and mostly just hitting enter many times, literally as James nor his followers have any skills aside the ones they use automatically. The final fight is the hardest fight of the game and I suppose rightfully so, however it was very scripted and relied on you playing completely different than during the entire rest of the game. Had more fights been like the final fight, the game would definitely have a higher score.

Aside the lackluster combat, there's also some different elements such as using ability to transform to a dog and dig things up such as money from the couch or passing a guard that doesn't let humans pass and so on. It is neat idea that could have been explored a lot more, along with the many other powers. Aside it, there are few puzzle elements which are really easy and very basic, nothing really stands out.

Presentation

The game has some nice music but some of the music is copyrighted and when Let's playing the game, I had to mute quite several bits of audio in several videos.

The graphics are mostly RTP and the custom faces and arts are silly and fit the game's weird mood perfectly.

Extra

This game is apparently being turned into a comicbook, which I'm looking forward to. Many of the arts are actually used from the comic apparently so they may compliment each other even better once the comic is released.

Final thoughts

BGFT: James Lucas story has its inherent faults, the gameplay is somewhat lackluster and the ending is very bad to an otherwise enjoyable tale of bigfoot hunting. However, despite these problems (which are definitely NOT minor nitpicks) the game never did feel boring, not even once. I had my share of laughs and I found myself liking the weird cast of characters and just wanting to play some more to see what will happen next. With some polish, the game definitely would have landed a much higher score but it is still worth trying for the novelty of the weird&fun factor alone.

Excellent review, one where I agreed on everything mostly. The tropes you listed are indeed accurate. I appreciate your time.
