"Prelude" is a simple introduction to the "raincoat kid".
You may see it as a Prelude to "Hanging on", where this character also appears, but it stands a simple, few minutes-long experience.
This review is part of the Secret Santa of RMN, happy presents, Merry Christmas!
This is not an image of the actual game. But fanart, beware.
Crackling is the fire,
Rain has passed.
Not so the desire,
To be more than last.
Our protagonist aka "raincoat kid" is camping with her father, who is nowhere to be seen. And while it should have been a fun trip, it is not.
The game is very short and is remiscent in its compact design and simplicity, relying on atmosphere with few lines of dialogue, of Pizza's art games.
However, where Pizza's games are usually open-ended and involve broader concepts or ideas, Prelude is spot-on and very precise in what is happening story-wise.
This makes it a very very small story of a child being neglected, but also gives us a clear idea of what is going on. You do have a little bit of freedom in interpreting what the ending means.
The game depicts a short journey to "reach the stars" quite literally, with short lines of text inbetween. The music consists of mainly sounds and noises, creating a very real and soft atmosphere.
Unity's spriting shares this simplicity and conveys it beautifully so.
The game starts medias in res, in the middle of a camp site .. and while it is a little jarring to start out, it does suit the tone of the game to get used to the surroundings slowly. The absence of any menu makes it feel more natural.
The monologue is fairly clean and simple - it is mostly serious in tone, but also depicts a little bit of childishness, like the quoted "I insisted I take my bird, she (mom) insisted I take my raincoat". Her expressing the love for the pet bird. It is simple and I thoroughly enjoyed the style for all it offers.
A few words were cut-off which I assume is due to the font not being applied for me properly (I did install it, and the credits used the intended font)
You advance the game by walking around and following a trail of bottles, which your protagonist's reaction to also adds to the story and shows a reflection of the journey the raincoat kid is on.
This is a beautiful, compact and cute game with an underlying sadness.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, although the ending had little impact due to it being up completely to interpretation. While the game has a very small scope, it has a great execution.

Considering the fact that she is trying to grow, and wishing for a better future - you may see it as her indeed taking steps towards her own independence and courage, which is also shown in the fact she is going to see the stars alone, if her father is not going to with her. At the cost of a little bit of her childhood and joy, as her pet bird which had been a source of comfort and strength for her is flying away.
