Follow The Darkness Review
Follow The Darkness Review
Gameplay: "Calls itself a spiritual being, can't keep up with a human."
Follow The Darkness has the chasing concept. Good, but of how faulty it is pretty much describes overall gameplay. Backtracking was used, but some of the executions of it seem way too abused. Though, with the help of a stamina system, it makes the player reserve some of its stamina as much as possible for a random chase to occur. Not only, that chases are restricted to some parts. If a player retreats to an enclosed room, the chaser won't appear at all, which makes the tension less. The thoughts of why the chaser randomly appearing out of nowhere seem to be much from the developers insight considering that chases can't happen inside tight spaces.
Though, it invokes a sense of dread throughout, which pretty much makes up for the gameplay errors. But in the end, that's where everything ramps up. The difficulty rises and as a result, preserving your stamina is way better than using it early on due to its slow regen rate. It pretty much says screw you to the player, being the penultimate scene before the end.
As for the exploration parts, it pretty much screams obvious to what it seems to be. And that's for the better of it.
Pros:
- Chase scenes
- Stamina system
- Random chase scenes
- Difficulty scales
Cons:
- Chase scenes
- Easily escapable
- Stamina regen is way too slow
- Chaser can't go to rooms
Graphics And Music: "This is disturbing."
Everything is custom. From graphics to music. It pretty much fits the theme of the game and how old times (XP) tend to conflict with the modern world (VX Ace). And that's pretty much some sort of symbolism to think of. Speaking of which, ambience is lacking, but effective considering the horror scenario. The only time music plays is either in a dramatic scene or in a chasing scene.
Either way, there's pretty much nothing to talk about if when it comes to the graphics or the music. It pretty much comes naturally.
Pros:
- Custom
- Ambience fitting
Cons:
- Qualms with the title screen
Story: "Legends say that you have to die. Easy as that."
The story is this. You are a teenager who forgot what happened prior to an incident. And oddly enough, a strange entity stalks you throughout. You consult someone who knows what it is, and it turns out to be a legend about a fox-masked entity giving out justice. Because being a deity pretty much says screw the rules, you'll die. As you move on, you finally remember what happened... just as the game ends.
This is pretty much a deity just trying to screw up with you because justice 'demands' and that morality is nothing to them. Assholes, really. But you have no choice along with the main character with escaping pretty much the only option... or resolving it.
It's pretty much what you see on TVTropes. You get dragged to a parallel dimension, you get your ass kicked, so on and so forth. But how the story progress is what confused me throughout. Even so that I had a clear conscience of it at the end, I did not expect, as a player, to get Filipino'd right in the damn face. To have the main character slowly dying. Well, this is a horror game so this is unexpectedly normal.
In the end, you atone but still die. A bittersweet ending. Overall, it's pretty simple like a folklore story that you usually see. The end is not what I expected it to be, but who cares. It did give out some pieces of the puzzle throughout and I already had an idea as to what really happened. But the twists still come here and there. So yeah.
Pros:
- The twists are real
- Has a folklore kind of story
- Simple
Cons:
- Confusing at times
- The deity's irresponsible behavior
Overall: "Grudges are for kids. Therefore, you are an imbecile."
The game needs some evaluation with the gameplay along with some parts of the story. Overall, it pretty much stands as a game. Though that there are pretty much fucked up things in it that needs to be fixed, it still is a good game in the end. Sadly, it needs to be a 3.5 star review considering that the story confused me at some points along with the gameplay. But that doesn't stop it from being a memorable experience.
It did catch me off guard at certain events. And that is...
Wait, gotta get my knife. Some girl in a kimono with a fox mask wants to kill me. Be riiiight back.

I was going to publish this review a year ago, but I always tend to forget stuff. Plus, you shouldn't be surprised considering that the possibility of getting another review would be due to the ongoing event right now.
