Under the sea. Darling it's better. Down where it's wetter!

Hello. Oh yesss, we're underwater once again!
In this game made by ToninaDev in 2022, realized with RPG Maker MV, we will wake up on a small boat with amnesia. Oh no, do not worry, it's not the classical story of the amnesiac hero that has to fight hordes of enemies to learn the truth. Absolutely not! Out hero joins the new friend Comi (a little girl that lives in Gata Island with her grandmother) at her family business, the Mauri Oceanografic Team! And this means exploring the sea, look for treasures, training dolphins, and so on! After all Comi saved him and he still needs food and lodging, so he has to work for this at least until he will recover his memories!
I like the art of this game! Characters look interesting and unique!
This game is a linear story divided into 7 chapters, that will take about 5 hours to complete, anyway besides the mandatory tasks there will be also some optional side quests (there are three big ones besides the main quest) and collectibles that you may ignore, if you want. A little warning is that the story in some parts will be a bit dark, and as we get close to the truth there will be mature themes and horror elements, disturbing events and twists, flashing lights and jumpscares. Especially after chapter 5, but I won't spoil what will happen.
The game is basically a story driven adventure, each chapter will introduce a new location and new tasks, like looking for certain items and solving puzzles, taking photos of the fishes, exploring and investigating various areas.
There is also a sort of minigame regarding the dolphin that includes some acrobatic battles against different contenders, until you meet Nix, a mythic creature (from german/swedish legends),a spirit of water.
We're under the sea here, of course! But doing what and looking for what? Play and see!
Visually the game is beautiful: a colorful custom made world with original and well designed characters and a custom made setting that despite the cute outlook of some characters (like the sea slug you will meet shortly after the beginning of the game) it also includes angst and darkness, but there is also comedy and humor! There are also some horror aspects and well, I admit at first I did not expected to enjoy so much a game that's basically an adventure and not the classic rpgmaker jrpg that I usually play.
The locations are also well designed (have you ever played a game where you visit a mansion near Italy that rests under the sea? Or a mysterious location inside an iceberg in the middle of the Antartic sea? I guess not!) and the sea theme is original and well couples with the mystery/horror scenarios. What else? Oh the dialogues were good too, I absolutely was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the attention to the detail and storytelling of the developer.
Cool! These fish are real, so this game is also instructive! I also didn't know they looked like this!
Final Verdict
The Water is Wide isn't a complex game, but an easy and enjoyable experience that includes a great story, amazing dialogues and extra missions. I liked it and I did the full experience, trying to do every optional thing since there is nothing as good as a game with a cool story that's also enjoyable and not too challenging or frustrating. I know, some players would prefer more complex puzzles and tasks, battles or something else, but this is not that kind of game. Here it's the story the main theme, is a narrative adventure so do not expect an open world or difficult enigmas.
BUT if you want to relax, play an interactive intriguing story with an atypical setting that will keep you involved from the beginning to the end, this is an excellent option. A really solid and enjoyable experience, five hours but it's worth of a playthrough! There is plenty of games in this sea... but this is a very good one!
