Coming across this game in the Latest Downloads tab, I was attracted by it's presentation in it's page, and so I decided to give it a try for myself. The game hasn't had any reviews yet, so I decided to give one myself, because I think it deserves one.
Soleil is the sequel to The Water is Wide, and is developed by ToninaDev in RPG Maker MZ (although, I should add that it barely feels like it) and is expected to be completed in 2024. For now, chapter - or Day 1 is available and is about an hour long. Since I haven't played the first game, I dove into it completely blind, and so I can't really write much about how well it compares to it. However, the backstory is referenced enough so you don't feel a gap in the general story.

The game itself is a (now well-tested) formula of laid back comedy / psychological horror, that reminds of one game in particular, that seems to my eyes as a pretty big inspiration; Omori. Not meaning to categorize every similar game in such a broad category, but I do believe this games have some common ground with it in terms of presentation. While the game is made with RPG Maker, there are no signs of RPG in it, instead it leans more in a narrative path, so in that sense, I would say it's an interactive visual novel, and so I will only discuss its narrative, and all the other stuff that comes with presenting it.

In this game you play as Coco, a kid that the backstory vaguely suggests that it's been blinded in the past, and now sees with it's lil' eye robot, that for now, it doesn't seem to play an important role to the story, expect its little expressions and such. The kid (unspecified gender, I'll refer as a boy) lives with his sister, Mimi, and their (hated by her) father. in the About section of the game's page, it's stated:

♢ Play the part of Coco, a mysterious ex-orphan trapped inside a world where...

This should be a part of story from the first game, because it's not mentioned how he's an orphan or he is "trapped inside" the world, but I guess it could be meant metaphorically, too. While he doesn't play much of a role in the story as of now, Mimi, on the other hand, is probably one of the more plot-centric characters, as seen in the ending. Other characters that follow Coco include Mina (what's with the 2-syllable names?), who serves as an antithesis for Mimi, as they almost never agree, and their views are quite different. Lev, who as of now doesn't play much of a role in the grand sceme of things, and Mary, who is bullied by the villain for most of the game, Tori, who pressures her into doing things she doesn't want to. So basically the plot is helping her escape Tori's influence, but of course it's not that simple.

As a story, I feel that it does have potential for deepening further, as it will probably do in the next Days, but it seems that it's been pretty well fledged out, so I don't have anything to say in that regard, until it's finished. I'd say that the pacing is good enough, and while the very long scenes may turn some people off, I believe that there is enough suspense to keep the viewer interested. As far as writing goes, I wouldn't say it's bad, either, however I'd way that some jokes could improve, and some dialogue could use more of an impact in some moments, but I don't think it's bad. What would I know, though, I made Summer's Day...

The graphics are really eye-catching and fledged out, so I don't have anything to say. The overworld ones all blend nicely in it and work greatly for the general laid-back comedic style, while giving a unique style that you don't see that often in RPG Maker games. However the character graphics in the scenes could be improved further, and I'd suggest some more animation, but that's all!
The music in this game also does a lot to serve the general vibe of the game, however I might add that some tracks could get annoying after some repetition, but there's a lot of different music in the game, so it doesn't bother me much. It's pretty well fledged out too, although a bit unmemorable.

All and all, I think this game has a lot of potential, and I'm interested to watch the rest of the game and see how things develop. I'm hoping it meets the deadline of 2024, and I'm hoping the best of luck to Tonina!
