Cute, but repetitive.

I’ve never played a Dating Sim before this game, so it was a bit of a new experience for me, and this one struck me as fairly simple and probably a good gateway for anyone interested in trying the genre, which probably includes you if you’re reading this! Don’t be ashamed, I won’t judge you…

Merui is playing her favorite MMO during her school lunch break when another player named Alistair swoops in and steals her kill, as well as the rare item this enemy drops. Merui takes this quite personally, but before she can do anything about it, the internet connection at her school fails and both she and Alistair are dropped from the game. Merui deduces that Alistair must be a student at her school, and learns that only three other students besides herself were using the internet at that time; Travis, a cranky gamer, Shiro, a shy loner, and Derek, a popular jock. Merui is determined to figure out which of these three is Alistair so that she can get her revenge, but by the time she figures everything out, revenge might be the last thing on her mind.

This game also has the most amusingly misleading promotional poster in history.

Really screams “Dating Sim” doesn’t it?

Level Design 2/5
There aren’t really “levels” in this game so much as just various branches in the story you can take. After the intro is over each day will begin by heading off to school and you’ll be presented with a series of options of what to spend that day doing, depending on which of the three guys you wish to investigate that day. At first, all three are reluctant to open up to her, but reaching certain levels of “affinity” will trigger scenes with each guy in which they’ll reveal a little bit more about themselves. You can raise affinity by purchasing various items such as games or clothing that will impress each guy, as well as spending your evenings raising the “Stat” that each of them appreciates the most. It is a fairly typical approach, although there aren’t many stats or options so it’s pretty easy to focus on whichever guy you are working on while only paying occasional lip service to anything else.

The main downfall of this is that after a while, the game gets very repetitive. You need only somewhat high affinity with a certain guy to trigger scenes, but to trigger a “good ending” you’ll need to have very high affinity with one. This means spending a lot of time with one guy and there simply aren’t enough unique scenes for each character. Instead, you’ll end up seeing the same few over and over. The game lasts only thirty days so you don’t have much time to get one each guy’s good side, and sometimes whether you trigger scenes is arbitrary and random.

One other problem I had is sometimes triggering a scene would overrule whatever other perks going to particular places would have. For instance, going to the mall and triggering a scene with Derek would sometimes prevent me from buying anything.

I suppose I should mention the art too. It’s of an extremely high quality, but it is very anime-influenced. That’s either your thing or it isn’t. I personally liked it but not everyone is going to be a fan.

Characters 4/5
The characters are quite vibrant and well-developed in this game. Despite Merui being a cute redhead who plays MMOs, some of the guys are less than enthusiastic about spending time with her and aren’t always willing to reveal anything about themselves. But will a little persistence you will get a lot of character development out of each. Alistair’s identity is only one of the many secrets to be uncovered. Merui herself is a fairly good “Everygirl” who is easy enough to identify with, and if you’re wondering why I am identifying with a sixteen year old girl, it is because she asks the really important questions.

“Where’s my machete?”

Since the protagonist of this game is a girl, the game probably focuses a little more on romance than those dating sims marketed towards guys. The dialogue is generally quite good and the characters fairly likeable, but some of the more overly “romantic” dialogue felt a little cheesy to me.

Story 3/5
The story is pretty amusing and provides a compelling enough reason to delve into the game. Even if you’re not interested in the romance you might enjoy doing a bit of detective work in discovering the identity of your nemesis. There are enough clues, twists and red herrings to keep you on your toes. However, even after completing the game you probably won’t know all the answers, and you’ll probably need to play through a few times to get a full idea of exactly what was going on.

Music and Sound 3/5:
The best way I can describe the music in this game is that it is relaxing. Although there are quite a few tracks and it changes appropriately during certain scenes, it is almost impossible to be stressed out while playing this game due to the music. The only draw back is sometimes it seems to change too rapidly and you’ll rarely get a chance to hear some of it.

Overall 3/5:
While I don’t have any frame of reference for comparing this to other similar titles, I enjoyed playing this game. So if you’re curious (don’t be embarrassed!) it probably wouldn’t hurt to download it and check it out!

Oh Merui, your naiveté is like a fragile flower about to be bulldozed, steamrolled, and paved over to make a parking lot.

Solitayre, you're on a roll! I'm glad you liked it :D
Just a question, what ending did you got first? 'w')b

Also yes, that promotional poster is incredibly but hilariously misleading haha :D

I got the Travis ending.
This is a good review. I'm also preparing a review for this game, and fortunately it won't be repetitive compared to this one.

I got the Travis ending

Somehow I'm not surprised by this.
His calm and collected attitude reminds me a lot of your reviewing style!
Okay, yes I'm a guy, I played through this, and I enjoyed it to some extent. It was a nice departure from the traditional RM formula. But now I think I need to play a game with a bit more brawn, and maybe a bit of blood and gore, to remind myself I'm still a man. Although my wife would probably laugh at me if she saw me playing this.

But in any case, I agree with this review 100%. It's almost like Solitayre was reading my mind. So, I didn't think it was needed to rehash the same thing in a separate review, and decided to just comment instead. I, too, have never played a dating sim before. In that case, I never played through a visual novel before, either. It was different, and I enjoyed it as a complete sit through.

I do agree that it gets very repetitive, which is the weakest part of the game. Quite often, nothing happened as you went from day to day. And some parts were so repetitive to the point I was able to speed through some days faster than others, which is why I probaby was able to complete it in one sitting. I stumbled upon the perpetrator by accident by the luck of a scene, but I kind of figured out who it was based on the personality of the characters you meet. Still, anybody wanting to play through all scenarios, make sure to save on the 30th day, sometime before you have to guess the person.

None of your choices throughout really makes a difference to the outcome, but it was still fun to play through once. Hopefully somebody else can use Renpy and create more visual style novels, it'd be fun to see what somebody else can come up with. An actual fantasy adventure instead of a dating sim next time, perhaps?
Fantasy adventure visual novels = noooo
