RPG Maker versions these days - Question from a Beginner

I suppose since I have no experience at all, I might as well start fresh with the newest version. I have programming experience (no game programming, however), so there's that...Really the only reason I was resisting trying the new ones was I'm going for an FFIV-style combat system. That is: Simple. My time is limited and I mostly just want a good story (easier said than done of course), but maybe when I learn to use the tools more could be done. I generally do like the FF-style of combat, so hopefully that system can be used in VX through scripting? If not, eh.

That said, I'm well aware the odds of me actually finishing a game. I dug up the sprites I'd done before life got in the way, and I'd only fully animated one character. The other seven main ones ended up only having their front views done. -_-

RPG Maker versions these days - Question from a Beginner

Long time reader, first time poster of a creation-based question.

A while back I started working on sprites and story for a game idea, but life happened and I never had time to really get off the ground doing maps and such. I really don't have much time now either, but thought it would be fun to start working on an RPG Maker game in my spare time, especially after playing a few good ones lately.

My question is this: Are people still using RPG Maker 2003 (which I have), or are the new ones significantly better? I ask because I generally like the FFVI-style of combat (not to mention I've been working on sprites for such), and didn't think the new Makers used that system. Of course there's also the option of some kind of override, but I don't know if that's possible.

While I'm at it, I'm also looking for some good village and town tilesets...the spirtes I'm using are FFVI-inspired, so any of those era of SNES game tilesets would work.

Hero's Realm v1.5

Having finished the game now, I can say a couple of things:
- It was certainly worth the wait.
- I enjoyed it enough to keep it on my computer and play it again in the future, easily putting it as enjoyable as FFV or FFIII (replayability with the jobs, to some extent, is comparable to those Final Fantasies the most.) Obviously the character personalities were kept lightly defined, but that doesn't bother me. The balanced use of four different parties at once was really well done.
- Aside from a couple of bugs, I was really surprised how cohesive everything was. Everything flowed, including access to the extra, non-essential areas. You could never get excessively powerful without earning it in some way. It never felt cheap.

I'll mention the few bugs of note I found, more as a warning to people in case they get hit and might get discouraged from finishing:
- Eastgate's east exit ended chapter 1 even when I was in chapter 5. The main noble's house in Okasa similarly ended chapter 3 when I was in chapter 5, but I believe only when I exited on a tile I hadn't exited on prior (originally ended by walking out the middle. If I exited on the left later, the chapter ended, which ended up buggy).
- At some point after I had a Daredevil, a Channeler, and a couple of Champions, everyone's experience reset to a significantly smaller number (levels remained, but exp dropped so some people had 74k-ish, but needed 580k to level. Ouch. Luckily I was of sufficient level to keep going, since my equipment was good. I wish I could identify the problem better. By the time I finally leveled everyone up to do a level-specific challenge, my daredevil was level 53. For some reason most battles with that party weren't too challenging after that...

So really, just save more than one game before entering any areas just in case something happens inside. Even if something does happen, just play a little longer. Playtime has been artificially stretched, and that's not really a bad thing. ;)

Anyhow, congratulations on finishing, Kentona, and thanks for finishing the design. If Hellion's of the same quality (and I recall I enjoyed the demo quite a bit), I'll have to make a "Kentona's RPGs" folder on my computer. Hero's Realm was a fantastic game that I really enjoyed, and its high quality still surprised me, even after I had complimented you a year ago on the high quality of the first four chapters. Please keep it up!

Hero's Realm v1.5

Addition, as I just hit the temple of class change - for whatever reason it wants to only convert my Wizard to a Champion rather than a Sage.

Edit - Also, the class description window doesn't come up when that option is selected.

Now that I'm here I'm having all kinds of indecision with regards to who to make a Daredevil, whether to upgrade to champions, etc. :'( I know, my life must be rough.

Edit #2 - Painful Bug (Chapter 5):
The bug I mentioned earlier about passing through Eastgate (east of Stromholm) may have more downsides than I thought...I figured it wasn't a necessary step, but I can't find another way in to Jermania/to get to Jardin. Every time I try to go through Eastgate, Chapter 1 ends again, which takes all of my equipment away and drops me at the Chapter 2 starting town. I've tried passing through in both night and day, and with both Holdana and Raj as leaders, to no avail. I've done the four towers, and miscellaneous other things, but no other divine objects quests yet.

Hero's Realm v1.5

I don't know yet for sure how I'll be upgrading the classes except for definately turning my engineer into a daredevil. I'm guessing "Secret Classes" are the Champion, Sage, etc.

Holdana
Druid (May turn into a Templar)
Black Knight
Engineer (Will turn into a Daredevil)

Zefiryn
Ronin
Paladin
Witch (May turn into a Channeler)

Akira
Wizard
Paladin
Black Knight

Raj
Ronin
Paladin
Wizard

- I like the paladin's healing + skills, so they may stay paladins.
- Black Knights may go to Champions.
- My Witch will probably use an elfstone to go to Channeler.
- My Engineer will definately go Daredevil.
- My Druid will probably use an elfstone to go to a Templar.
- My Ronin will probably go champion, or stay the same.

I guess I'm boring. I didn't really chance anything on the green classes. Maybe on the next playthrough ;)

Hero's Realm v1.5

I'm loving it as well. Instead of pick up where I left off, I restarted the game, so I'm only now back to Chapter 5.

Just found a bug I thought I'd post:
I went to Stromholm in Chapter 5 and, completely forgetting what I was there for quest-wise, I decided to explore. I went to the "bridge" from Chapter 1 almost directly east of Stromholm, and when I crossed it, an "end of chapter 1" came up, I got transported to the beginning of chapter 2's area, lost all but 2 items in my equipment, and the music stopped. I loaded up my previous game, but the music was still stopped. I planned to quit to reset the music, but as I seem to have the memory of a snail(the music error has been reported before and I've read about it), I decided to save first, tried saving over my game, and poof - crash + destroyed save.

Another lesson to children: make multiple saves! I had to use a very late Chapter 4 save and get back to Chapter 5. Luckily I wasn't too far in. That said, the quality of the game prevented me from saying "Screw this" and giving up, and I'm now back to where I was. I'm really loving this game and the old school feel. Balance feels perfect thus far. These days I can't replay Final Fantasy 4/5/6 without an emulator because I can't stand moving and leveling so slowly, but it turns out it's because of familiarity and not a lack of attention, since I'm enjoying Hero's Realm so much.

Release Date Set

I registered just so I could post how much I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, I know that's sad. I don't care!
