Good gracious, the reviews for Mad Max are just skyrocketing. I'm hyped to see this movie.

Why they wanted to do a remake (which is how the synopsis reads) of that classic is beyond me, but hey it's George Miller so if anyone has the right, he does.
Basically the idea is that they gave George Miller money to go into the desert and blow up stuff, so he did. It wasn't supposed to be a major big budget film, it had quite a small budget. He came back and showed them the film. The studio execs were so excited they gave him more money to go back into the desert and blow up more stuff, and they pushed the film's release to the summer as one of their major releases. Obviously because they were excited that it was actually fantastic.
I'm pretty excited for this film. Although I feel like the hype train is getting so huge, and people are looking at the trailer like, "What's so special?" I just hope this doesn't turn into another Edge of Tomorrow, that is, a disappointing return for an otherwise good quality film.

Well the original was made on a shoestring budget too, it was only once you got to Thunderdome that the big money started getting thrown at it. Blowing stuff up in the desert is George's stock in trade, he'd be happy just to do that for years, that and movies about singing and dancing animals.
Yeah, I remember the original Mad Max being on a real low budget.
On researching the numbers, it seems Mad Max was at a $200k budget and returned $99.8million worldwide, Mad Max 2 was on a $2million budget and returned $24.6million worldwide, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was on a $10million production budget and returned $36.2million worldwide.
Mad Max: Fury Road has a $150million budget, making it the largest budget Mad Max film by a factor of 15.
"In order to tell this story, we came up with two others. We’ve written the screenplay of one and the novelization of another, but it’s a very rough novel. We kept working on them while we were working on other things." - George Miller
Mad Max: Furiosa is the title of the already planned, and apparently scripted, sequel.

Well that looks like an example of the law of diminishing returns. I think he's just rebooting the trilogy, only this time actually allowing Max a modicum of redemption and possible contentment at the end. Not having Mel play the role will make than transition much easier, not to mention he's much too old for it now (and you know, Mel, which is a good reason not to cast him in anything). Most younger audiences have probably never seen the original or even the sequel though there are probably more that saw Thunderdome.
Apparently it's also shifting the focus towards Charlize Theron's character, who the sequel is pretty much dedicated to, almost like a spinoff.
It's also a reboot and a sequel apparently, that practically ignores the events of Thunderdome as if they didn't happen.

I liked Thunderdome, it was just ridiculous, and Tina Turner in a chainmail dress with crazy earrings is an image indelibly printed on my conciousness. It's a shame they are retconning it.
Honestly when I heard they were remaking Mad Max I lost all hope for everything. I didn't want to have anything to do with it. Don't fix what isn't broken.
But if the reviews are this positive I might have to consider I was wrong.

My point of view.
I don't know, Mel only as a cameo? Can you imagine star wars with James Franco as Han Solo?
I would prefer to make it twenty years in future, kiddos all grown up, Max being brainwashed...
Positive reviews doesn't mean anything. Avatar had these and it doesn't make it any better. They can be just sorry, that makers spent such an outrageous sum.

I loved Avatar. I think it's easy to hate on Avatar because it was so popular but I think it was well-made. Sure, it suffered from pacing issues, and being overlong and a bit frivolous, but generally I thought it was an action-packed thrill ride.
I'm not saying that critic's ratings mean everything, but if you're only interested in Mad Max because of Mel Gibson, I think you're forgetting that George mother fricking Miller is the center of the Mad Max universe, not Mel, and I'm sure he'll give us what we need. Sure, Mel may be his own man, just like Bond gets a new actor every so often, people can fill characters' shoes if they're cast right.
Edit: But honestly, the only way to know is to watch. I haven't watched it yet either, but I'm only excited because there are good signs for this one. I knew from the trailer that it was going to be right down my alley anyway, so eff the critics, I'm going to make my own opinion of the thing, I just hope it's going to be a darn good thrill ride like it looks to be.
