What is the Biggest Design Flaw in Games?
author=Crystalgate
One very common, and often also bad design flaw, is giving the player tools that are based on flavor, but lacks functionality.
Imagine a sniper rifle in an FPS where you never face enemies from a great range. That would be rather bad. This one error isn't very common, heck I can't even think of a single example of an FPS that gets this part wrong. However, if we move on to RPGs this problem becomes almost a rule rather than an exception.
Let's look at a sleep spell. The problem that spell solves (if it works) is enemies being able to do something. However, in most RPGs I've played, you can just go on an offense and heal up whatever damage you take. That means enemies being able to do stuff isn't really a problem and consequently, the situation the sleep spell is designed to solve isn't a problem. It shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that few are using skills that solves non-problematic situations, but apparently it does.
It's not only RPGs that suffers from this design flaw. The Megaman series for example, is more often than not also hit. Usually Megaman will get at least one weapon which is almost useless outside of hitting a boss' weakness. What I think RPGs and the Megaman series has in common is that the tools given to the player are decided before anyone has looked at which problems the player will face. RPGs often hands the player skills based on the idea that those skills simple should exist or based on a character concept. The Megaman series has a self imposed rule of giving the player at least eight weapons from bosses as well as other self imposed rules based on what weapons existed in previous Megaman games.
That's why I <3 clever use of status effects, and sometimes almost requiring their use. You run into a monster that hits a lot harder than you think it should? Blind it!

So, Final Tear 3
author=Karsumanauthor=sbesterA general response to all three of you:author=WolfCoderY'know, I played Final Tear 1, and that sums it up. It was actually entertaining as hell with the "all your base r belong to us" type dialogue, and I wanted to play further than I did. The only thing that prevented me from doing so was that it was too grind heavy and the learning curve was too steep. That's why it bothers me that so many people chased him off the site, I enjoyed that game more than I do most other rm games here. It may have been bad, but was a fuck load more entertaining than some of the more acclaimed titles here.author=LockeZExactly, you and me both. This is really the only thing I also kind of wonder about this project.
He claimed his game's other reviews were actually removed (presumably by the RMN mods) which was the last straw for him. I don't know if they were removed because there was evidence to suggest he wrote them himself, or if he's lying or just wrong about the removal of those reviews, or if the authors are the ones who took them down, or what. I'd like to know more about that, as it does actually seem unfair for all his game's good reviews to be deleted, unless there were some seriously problematic circumstances.
I actually like so-bad-its-awesome video games and this game is much better than horrible- it's transcendent... If only I get a chance to find out if I'm right! It's a shame he removed the game, I was going to recommend people to play it.
I denied the reviews. They were clearly extremely biased, poorly written, provided very little detail about how the game proceeds and plays - and I did not accept them in the first place. While I admit 'so good it's bad' can be fun, the actual quality of the game isn't really up to debate - everyone agrees the game is garbage except the creator and the puppets that reviewed it. Fable of Heroes and Legendary Legend? Yes, they caused controversy, but it was not so much because some or even most people thought they were bad - it's because they were made featured games. Additionally, the Fable of Heroes fellow took it extremely well despite how pathetically venomous things got.
That's not really the case with this game. This game stands a zero percent chance of ever being a featured game. It's horribly written, badly designed, the gameplay is shit (and non-existent for the first several hours) and is buggy as hell - the creator even encrypts the game to make it even harder to advance, as the player cannot fix his crappy bugs or increase the walk speed. Additionally, the creator himself does not take any real criticism and seems to shrug off anything anybody says that is even a tad negative.
I am not going to subject a random person that finds this site who just wants a decent, not extremely offensive experience to that - they'd never return. That is why those reviews were removed.
I figured this was fairly common knowledge, but probably a good idea to spell it out for those who saw it as malicious.
Regardless of the drama it causes on the boards and elsewhere, something like this is good for the site as a whole since I'm sure a majority of people that find their way here don't even bother with the forums.

About this whole FT3 business though, this site does have a tendency to latch onto a project and beat it (and its creator) down until their reputation is completely dead. Legendary Legend, anyone? This just seems to be the next target in RMN's cruel cycle of hatred..
I find this only to be true when a game is completely awful, but mysterious reviews pop up saying it's amazing (like the one that was singing its praises, but couldn't do anything more than vaguely reference the intro). In addition that, the creators often make ridiculously inflated claims about its quality, and get defensive about, or shoot down any form of valid criticism.
In the case of FT3, all these aspects were magnified like crazy.
But for all we know, all of our brains may just have the "weigth" of a peanut, and he looks at us all and says, "you a stupid idiot."
