Nomic: game thread

For my own clarification, how does Rule 203 apply here. I mentioned this in light of rule 201, but did not seek to amend or change it. Will this vote require unanimity or a simple majority?

Thanks guys,

I gave a better read to everything since I'm not at work right now. Not only do those two address this, but so does rule 211. So effectively this was only the time constraint here, and, I agree, pitifully poor.

If I can change focus, and stop me if need be, I'll look at elaborating rule 201. Specifically, I'm looking at the concept of our points. Currently we all have zero points, and our scores can increase or decrease. This implies room for negative scores, but doesn't require it. Hence, this new (unrelated) proposition

301: Negative Scores
Should a player have points deducted from their score, and the amount of the deduction is greater than the current score, said player's score will become negative in value.

Yeah, you're both right. Sorry, I did a bad job digesting the rules because I read it in a quick spurt.

How to proceed?

Sorry for my slow response; I've been going bonkers on a tight schedule recently. But it looks like I'm in time.

Also, Trihan, if you don't mind, does a proposition go to vote immediately, or are we allowed to air it, tidy it, and then submit it for a vote? My guess is that we have to vote on that.

At any rate, and in that mode, I propose and submit for a vote the following

301 : Judge Determination
If a Judge is needed for settling a dispute, the person to be selected as the Judge will be the player who is previous in the player order to the one currently proposing a new rule. If this Judge fails to appear and engage within a 72 hour period, then the person previous to them shall become the Judge. If they fail to act as Judge within 24 hours, the Game Master will be allowed to either act as Judge or appoint one.

Advice on Making a First Game

Yes, I plan on putting graphics into it. I don't consider it a serious obstacle since I've done that end before. I probably wont go too ambitious with the maps by implementing a tiling system or something like that. Just a decent sized background with things placed on it and rampant abuse of rectangles to block motion.

I'm enjoying the thinking around the save mechanic. I could see placing them back at the entrance as another viable option over the game over with stats in tact. This way the next run would be quicker and easier, and when they arrive at the death point again, they will probably be able to overcome that since they should be stronger. That said, doing a simple save seems well worth the effort and it would be one of the easier things for me to do.

I could always do a stupid text based game with a no frills graphics end like Don't Shit Your Pants, but I think I might try to be a wee bit more ambitious:

I personally would try and include a save system. I tend to play games in two ways:
10 minute burst
three hour marathon.
I would certainly want to be able to save for a 40 min game.
Edit: Even if it wasn't a game where, say, I could fail at the last minute and then have to start all over again.

Are you tempting me to implement torture? I might have to now!

Nomic: a game about changing the rules

I'll join this game. I've done similar before.

Favorite/Least Favorite Languages?

I grew up Bilinbual English & Greek. Greek is fun, most of the words are long enough that you have time to think of the grammar that has too many millenia pile up in it. I'm pretty handy in Mandarin since most of my classmates speak it, and some of them are pretty abysmal with English so it makes things better with them. I like the grammar since it is very direct and has no frills, however the sound of the language is atrocious. It has the quaint ring of a mule swallowing a sink disposal.

Languages I hate. That would probably be Haskell.

Advice on Making a First Game

I think I may have caused some confusion accidentally. I should have been clearer initially, but I'm writing this from the ground up in C/C++ with SDL. This is how I've done the games like Pong and Breakout before, and one of my driving factors is keeping my OOP skills up to par since I don't use them for work often. I wouldn't worry too much about how to drive images or sounds or how to work collision detection; it's all stuff I've done before so I'm pretty well acquainted with my tools.

Since it's my first go at an RPG, the big reason I asked was organizational advice and stuff above mechanics. Though I will definitely be taking the idea of a test enemy and test battle. I need to have a test one if I plan on making a dungeon full of them after all. A lot of the advice directed towards how to use the RPG Maker engines is still quite applicable. For example, SpellcraftQuill mentions common events like the on touch encounters, which I could extrapolate to modular functions of some kind or functions contained in a class.

Another fast question. I don't think the gameplay will go far beyond 40 minutes, maybe an hour. Do you think having a Save feature is needed, or for something that short is it permissible to skip? It will definitely be something that I develop at some point for a longer game, but I don't see longer games nearby, so is saving something I could, for the present only, forego?

Extra Creditsrecently did a series on making your first game, the link leads to the first ep (and they do a lot of interesting stuff on making games in general).
The gist of it was:
1: Have a goal to finish it in about 3 months. Even if it's buggy at the end of it, it is yours. Share it with your friends!
2: Have a basic idea of a schedule for completing this game.
3: in that time try out different things, and if you spend more than an hour trying to do one thing, look for a tutorial.
4: Cut, cut, cut and cut some more. At this point you want a minimum viable product, something that shows the core of the idea more than anything.

This may not be perfect for you, but it still could be helpful.

I really liked this series, thanks a bunch.

Everyone, also, thanks for the strong response. I've got some basic things going and I have all the tools I need installed. By the end of this week my # 1 goal is going to have sprites displaying. I feel this isn't too hard.
