It's happened twice now. I write/submit a review, the game vanishes.

Radiant Blades this time.

It wasn't exactly a good game, nor was it at all a favourable review. I can imagine the feelings that must boil up when someone slams your game, however neutrally and constructively, but it sort of undermines the whole reviewing/feedback process if you give a game a bad review at the risk of it simply being deleted.

This may be a foolish question, but is there a review archive? I think, if a review is fair, constructive and honest, it should remain somewhere on the site even if the dev deletes his/her game to avoid it being read. Fair enough if the review itself is shitty trash, but from a purely selfish POV, I feel like my time spent playing the game and writing the review have been totally wasted.

Like I say above, there should be some kind of archive for reviews, even if it's temporary, to stop the reviewer's work being for absolutely nothing. I refuse to feel pressured to give nothing but praise.

Dito.
But I don't see why that would affect me. Most of my bad scores stay where they are, and are even just as much appreciated. Some people take down their work to upload a reworked version (like tale of the lantern) and some just disappear into the abyss.

I don't see any problem.

Also, everything on this site is saved. I can still view my reviews, even if the gamepage is down.

Edit: As a sidenote Elder71, please refrain from doubleposting. I've seen you do it a couple of times, just edit it in. Abuse that button!

Apologies, I'll edit in future.

EDIT
Ha, here we go, straight away!
Ahem.
Anyway, is there a way I could read my recent review of Radiant Blades? I have the word doc version of course, but just for my future reference I'd like to know where to dig it out on-site.
That's the way to go!

It's in your submissions/profile. You can't use the direct link as it links you to the review on the gamepage, but you can still view it using the almighty edit button.
And thus with edit you get the entire text plus the preview option to see it as it would look like.

Gah! Of course!
Thank you.
You're very welcome!
2 abyssals with one page of reviews is tough luck, but I hope you'll stay in the business

I will, no doubt.

Having checked, though, I think it's actually 3.

Kentona was actually looking at a way to separate the reviews from the gamepages so that reviews and other media wouldn't be lost if the dev decided to AntiClimb their pages. I'm not sure how far along that plan got or if it's possible to do. Still the fact you can still see them regardless is a plus, it's just a shame it's a private viewing.

Yeah, it would be really nice if there was a public place where they were preserved for anyone to view.
Don't assume everyone here is a corporate entity looking for... investor feedback to create a salable product. A lot of these people are just kids who want to feel cool.

A review can be a valuable asset not only to the game developer, but also to other prospective developers who are able to analyze what is going on. But you must use discretion when you see a game's summary page.

It's very rare that people will represent their feelings honestly, because often, they aren't even aware of why they do what they do.

You can get to your review through the "Submission" tab. At least I can still edit my ancient Marvel Brothel Review from there (therefore being able to access the text) even though that game hasn't existed in ages.
I suppose my attitude of treating every game and its dev like they want serious criticism and feedback is a bit out of place at times and not everyone is looking for unreserved breakdowns of their work.

I can't think, off-hand, of a way to tell the difference though. A hobbying kid could make a great game just as easily as a serious, aspiring dev could make a horrible game. The only certain way to avoid hurting the feelings of those who just wanted to enjoy making a game for the hell of it and share it seems to be to 'resist reviewing bad games', which risks starving people who genuinely want to know what people think of their work.

I fully concede that I apply a high (maybe even unfairly high) standard when reviewing, perhaps I'll contact the devs ahead of time in future and get to know them a little.
Don't think like that. You haven't written many yet.
Nor has our lurker here ;)

You will be surprised by how many people can take serious criticismn. I've reviewed plenty of games, many of which were subpar to say the least. Most devs are surprisingly friendly and try to address the issues.

Some people can take it, some people can't. Simple as that. And your job is not to worry about why some can or can't, nor is it to pamper them.
If they can't take it, they are learning already. Will it harm them if they get upset? Will it harm you if they get upset?.
And if they do can take it, then all the better.

If you really are that worried, just look for games requesting feedback/reviews such as the thread that was link in another status post.
Or review games made by the more active forum people. They aren't allowed to whine or else they'll lose face! HAH!

Are you sure these games existed in the first place?
