It really depends. VX and Xp are pretty similar, It's just that VX is made for Rpg Maker beginners. Craze's explanation is better. Whatever works for you I guess...

The only PC Rpg makers are
-Rpg maker 95
-Rpg maker 2000
-Rpg maker 2003
-Rpg maker XP
-Rpg maker VX
(This is excluding tactical RM's)
Numbered Rpg makers are for consoles only, from what I've seen.
