There are people who I once knew. What happened to them? Did they just drift on to become a part of all things? It wouldn't be so bad to fade into the wholeness of the universe.

It certainly could.
I was just thinking about how many people I meet, spend some time getting to know, and then never see or hear from again.
And thinking that, for all the evidence, they might as well have returned to the all-encompassing universe that lies in the world I don't know.
I'm not a fool, but I am ultimately a small town, country man. The world I have experienced is more full of places than people.
You could expand that idea, though. It's perfectly possible to see an Internet more full of pages than users.
