Last night I had a dream of a world so forgiving, it might show some fortune on a fool like me. I awoke to the alarm clock, alone and so lonesome. Twenty years in Alaska...

You live in Alaska?!
Yes, for many years. The last frontier, north to the future, all that. And it's cold out.

But I can't stand spiders, snakes, or when it's more than about 80 F out. Or population densities above about 1 person per hectare. So I like it here.

Do you intend to move out of Alaska, at least for a while?
I've been around. I prefer it here. It's quiet and private.

It does wear on some people, though. In the winter you get very little sunlight, and some people just sit in their chair and stare. But it's a good kind of madness.

You'll have to tell us about this "good kind of madness".
Well, the darkness gets to people. Some folks (like me) can't sleep. We spend hours lost in some menial task, and we get ridiculous ideas...it was in just such a stupor that I started TurboSphere (which turned out to be less ridiculous than I first though).
Other people can't handle it and melt down. They loose all motivation, they become emotional wrecks, and sink into a strange depression.

Plus, year round we all can get kind of antsy. You can spend days without seeing another person, and you begin talking to yourself (a lot). I know of a few people who have 'friends' just for the sake of keeping the silence out (which works, though). It's important to keep your mind busy.

It's not like all that all the time, but you see it enough to know it happens. The good part is that you are forced to be somewhat nice to people, and you can get a lot done without any distractions.

Plus, it lets there be times when you can be alone in a way no where else allows. You can sit and hear absolutely nothing. Not a single soul around. There can be pure and utter silence, where the ringing in your ears becomes deafening. Those are powerful experiences.

But then there are times you wake up alone, cold and so lonesome. Both cold and lonesome in ways that you can't get many other places.

wow... it soundfs like living there is an adventure (to a certain extent) in and of itself, but I could have gotten it all wrong?
No, you got it right. It's definitely an adventure.
I could never get used to the cold. I'm used to 30+C since I've lived in Philippines before, but the moment autumn/winter hits here in HK, you feel sleepy and less motivated to do stuffs.
Twenty years will get one acclimated, I guess. But I always feel more sleepy and unmotivated when it's sunny, and much more focused when it's cold.
