Breath of Fire II is actually pretty good. Never appreciated the characters before (though some are clearly better than others)

OMG YESSSSSS
Uh liek spoilers below for ending and character stuff
Like, growing up, there were women in that game that were clear role models.
Like, Katt may be dumb but she's not stupid - she's got emotional intelligence and she can use high-end magic, she was just never taught how, so she deals with a lack of education, but she's still so kickass and brilliant. And her scenes with Tiga, knowing she doesn't love him but accepting his love and telling him that what they feel likely isn't enough but that she'll give it a shot... just so good. Especially the little bits strewn here and there about her clan and how rare it is to see them (the offer to buy her from the monster hunters, Tiga being ready to jump into marriage because he's never seen another Woren before, the fact you don't see any other Woren in your travels, the cat talk, etc) The fact she supports Ryu 100% after he saves her from the poisoned needle. She's hot-headed and brash but she pays back what she owes and cares for her friends enough to do anything for them.
Then Nina, who is Dealing With Shit but still so kind and capable. She doesn't let her history tie her down and she's willing to sacrifice herself to help save the world, but when her sister takes her place she doesn't fall apart, but instead gets back up and fights for the future.
Then there's Clarice, who is hiding her love for Tiga because she doesn't want it to get in the way of work. She accepts that he doesn't see her as more than a comrade and doesn't push the expectation of romance on him, instead focussing on the job at hand. Even when tortured in front of the whole church of evil asshats, she doesn't say a thing about the resistance.
Daisy, the hard-as-nails mother of Rand, who is super strong and pig-headed, but knows what she wants and isn't afraid to tell people to get stuffed no matter that they're authoritarian. She's hard on Rand, but she shows she loves him at the end when she sacrifices herself in his place. She's shown as having faults and not being really likable - she belittles Rand and is abusive towards him, but despite that she still loves him and puts his life before hers and pulls his friends into their home.
Petape, the spoiled princess whose brother decides to just up and away on travels, making sure that the kindgom is still there when he gets back. She gets frustrated with Jean, but it's clear she loves him despite all that he puts her through. When she believes that the kingdom will fall to an enemy she seeks to solve the issue herself.
Elforan who loves Sten but lets him go when he doesn't wish to stay, even going so far as to follow him on his journey and pretend to be a guard for your town (yes, you can get a guard in Tunland named El, and a discussion between 'him' and Sten reveals that it's highly likely 'he's' the princess in disguise) just to be near him. She isn't seen much of but she rules a military-based country and has done through wars in the past, keeping her people safe and making it a military might.
Valerie who followed her duty to find out about the evil of the world and travelled to the surface, where she fell in love with a human and had two children she adored. When evil came knocking she didn't hesitate to protect her home by transforming into a dragon and sealing the mountain passes so that the world could be safe from the demons. Then, when reunited with her son and daughter once more, she chooses to die in order to allow Ryu to head into Infinity and deal with the threat, leaving words of love for him.
Mina who never knew her sister was considered an ill omen and had her back when she found out - so much so that she chose to sacrifice her own life as a person to become the Giant Bird in her place, despite the knowledge that she would forget everything she was. That she would forget her mother and father, her sister who loved her and protected her, the cute dog-boi who could have been a love interest... everything and everyone she ever held dear would be gone and she chose to bear that in place of her sister, who she realised could do more for the world than she could at the point in time.
Patty/Yua, the lost sister of Ryu who went to the dragon to dream of her mother (the dragon who WAS her mother) and when the demon took the memories of the townspeople from her, left her all alone in the world. She found her own way, becoming a thief and making her way to support the resistance against the church, stealing to help others. She makes mistakes and isn't the best thief but she still retains that memory, many years later, of the dragon being special and races back in a heartbeat when it's mentioned that the dragon was injured. She doesn't know it's her mother, she doesn't know Ryu's her brother, all she knows is to follow her heart and instincts and does so, rushing to protect the last piece of her past life she has left.
This game doesn't get enough love for the things that are done with the characters and even with the abysmal translation it gets so much of them across. There's a reason it's one of my favourite games.
Hell, the whole end part from meeting Daisy to the last battle is such a trip and just such well-done story-telling and character-showing. Ugh.
And let me talk about how the few pervs in the game are called out and dealt with, and the perving is about the girls being cute, not about what they're wearing - which is great considering they could have gone places with Katt not actually wearing pants ever or Nina's skit being hitched all up the side or even Bleu's boobs hanging out so much. But they don't. The few comments are focussed on the girls' attractiveness and then they get either beat up by a stick or Dealt With by lightning bolts. The women in your party do not put up with shit.
Also, let's talk about just how much characterisation you get each and every time you head back home and talk to your allies. Every time something new happens in the story they say something different both out in the common room and in the privacy of their own rooms, which is just gah! A simple idea but one that fits.
Oh, and taking different characters with you amounts to different reactions to different scenes. Small changes but still nice to see.
And I kinda want to talk about the whole Afini thing because holy crap the choice there and your allies talking to you about it just... and the scene with the crystals and Evans... ;.;~<3
I finished streaming this game a week or so back and yes, it has faults. Yes, it has gameplay issues. But it's still one of my favourite games and I don't think I'll ever change that.

Oh god I've just gotten to the part where you need to get the Great Bird. I am not happy about this.
There's a guy in Wyndia who said "I'd become the great bird in a heartbeat" and the whole time I'm yelling "GET THAT GUY TO DO IT!!"
