So you've watched the protests, huh! The most hypocritical thing about it was Joseph Blatter saying that the thing that matters is non-American football (soccer :P). I guess high profile events are always used as a platform for the vox populi.
'Course, that stupid old dunt is only caring about his pockets and creating hype, as always.
Yet I can't hold my tears of how happy am I of our nation to be standing like this. :)
We aren't nationalists like the north americans, we don't feel the need to rub the brazillian flag in anyone's face... In fact, sadly I have to admit that we are ashamed of our country. But that's unreasonable. Such a beautiful, verdant country, with humble people, honesty, potential, charisma, and people with extremely warm hearts... We're just a tad snoozy, that's all. But that's enough for the bad sum to rule over the country as we sleep, and for us to wonder in shadows what happened and who ate the sun. Tis a shame, though I hope that now, we will wake up for good. We are an amazing country, and I am proud to be brazillian. :)
I've always thought Brazil was a cool country. Good luck to your people, Joseph.

Yeah ... let's see what happens tomorrow with that huge protest in Rio.
I haven't been following. Are people rioting because they're actually demanding some concrete reforms, or is it just the Brazilian version of #Occupy which went nowhere, accomplished nothing, and generally made political activism look childish?

People there are protesting because they're upset at all the spending they have been doing for the next World Cup and Olympics. They would rather have money invested in healthcare and education, among other things. Also, they are unhappy about all the corruption. So far they have been able to get the increases in public transportation rolled back. That was the issue that really get the protests started. It doesn't seem they are seeking to overthrow the current government, given that the approval rating (higher than 70%) is something those of other countries would be envious of.

Judging by the following article:

Brazil's Protests

it does sound somewhat like the Occupy movement (although there's more violence and repression involved) rather than the Arab Spring protests that resulted in some governments being overthrown. Whether they'll accomplish anything other than token concessions remains to be seen.

EDIT: The social media surrounding the protests was able to get Pele, Brazilian soccer's biggest icon, to retract from saying they should unite to support the national team.
