i'm so excited i've backed $1000 i couldn't resist with that _awesome_ reward

edit: hm. after all of that he said he's using the rewards for school supplies. Hm.
I don't feel like it's such a bad thing in the end, just incredibly naive.

I'm all for kids wanting to get into game design, since, you know, I started around that age too, but...

Probably not necessary to Kickstart the game. Just let the kid play around with the engine.
yes i know right
but i can totally see him wanting to incentive the kids like showing them that THEY CAN in a very naive way
Why does he need $500 for an RTP made RPG Maker game? Is it that easy to get money off people? Damn, I need to start looking into this kickstarter thing. Who knows how much I could get people to pay me for making a game with some custom made assets...

On one hand, it's a cute thing he's doing for his kid, so I can't be too hard on it. Maybe he feels like this is the way to show the game to the world so his kid feels proud that people are interested in the game they are making?

On the other hand, yeah, why does it need a Kickstarter at all? The money's not even to make the game. Surely there are better ways to about this beyond "I'll make a game for my kid that I'm making anyway in exchange for school supply money."

You know, when I was little, I was filling binders with game ideas, too. My dad never turned them into games for me, which I think was kind of a good thing. I had to learn my own ways of expressing myself, which I did through board games and card games, Qbasic, and eventually RPG Maker. If someone had just made it for me, I feel like I would have missed valuable lessons about the hard work it takes to finish projects.

On the other hand, I can totally get this dad's motivation. If I had a kid who wanted to make a game, it would be hard to refuse the idea of fulfilling a child's wishes to grant them some happiness.

How aware are the kids that this Kickstarter is happening? What I'm afraid of seeing is, in the future, the kids would not want to make games until they see money being given to them.

Also, they need to be made aware that the first games made are going to suck. A lot. But that's the growing pains of learning how to make games. And to ask for money from other to do this? No. I can't agree with this direction at all.

Most of my stuff on the topic is very similar to what others have said and seeing what it's really funding "I'm going to use the rewards to get school supplies for my kids." Its more of a fund my life kickstarter which goes against the terms of use.
I love stuff like this to really let kids embrace game design/devlopment early if they really want to do it but it doesn't really need to be funded. Just give this kid rpg maker and let them do it.
Oh yesh, I definitely disagree with this! But... I could picture a dad that has never played a game at all and being incredibly naive doing this for a genuinely good purpose (not that we should back it)

I agree 100% with unity too. This is very obviously a terrible project that hardly anyone would enjoy playing. But now, what breaks my impression of naivetè are the backer rewards. Those -- especially the $1000 tier -- are incredibly not innocent.

Also at first I thought this was asking for $200 but holy crap $500... what sort of supplies do these kids need anyway?

iPhones aren't cheap.

If what charblar said about these kinds of things being against the TOS, it should be taken down immediately, if nothing else but to enforce the site's rules. Legality and whatnot.

"The Superlands" in general is something I probably wouldn't want to throw out there to the world and brand my 8 year old son's name on it. Although I didn't grow up in an age where the internet was as refined and accessible as it is today, I'm certain that critique and all around harshness is a thing that this game will see. The name alone will drive others to comment poorly on it. It'd be fine if the kid has no access to the places that this project will be hosted on (if he's only told the positive things people are saying from his father, then there's no harm), but one glance at the computer will be all it takes to crush his dreams like a rotten egg.

Some things are better left behind closed doors. Have your teen son mow lawns to raise money for school supplies or something.

If my loins ever bear fruit, the first thing I want to do when my child opens its eyes for the first time is to get a few inches away from its face and say "Welcome to Earthland".
