it's difficult to wholly + accurately describe just how awful the sprite style of the Final Fantasy mobile ports is
Realistically shaded airship graphics.
Flatly shaded frosted-cookie-looking character sprites.
wat
But wait a minute, though, didn't the character sprites in the SNES game have shadows at their feet? The lack of that here makes them look even more out of place.

author=turkeyDawgActually, it's
Realistically shaded airship graphics.
"Resizing original airship graphics and leaving them in a terrible resolution."
... And holy god it looks abysmal.
Nessy found an image that putit pretty well a while back:

This seems like a weird move to me. Like, did they loose the original resources? Is this merely a (really bad) cash-grab to help fund FF15 and/or the re-do of FF7?

It's because (evidently) pixel art often displays badly on phones and definitely can't handle the rescaling between different screen sizes needed for phone games, which is why all phone games look really ugly and cartoony.
That's what I've heard anyways. Stuff like FF: Record Keeper makes me think it's not entirely true.
That very well may be, but, why port the IOS/Android version to the PC? This is the underlying question I'm asking.
Because AAA studios wouldn't dare to release an "out of date" product such as pixel art, no sir. They have stupid appearances to keep up.
Because they're cheap and would rather not recreate assets that they've already spent time *cough* creating for a device with similar capabilities, regardless of whether those old assets look good or not.
a.k.a. it's a port and they don't care about it.
