Personally, I was never overly fond of tutorials.

I find the most effective learning tool is to download other people's work and dissect them.

You can see ingame what those functions DO and then look at the events to see how they did it. I've learned more by doing this than I've picked up from tutorials.

Everyone learns differently, although yes, dissecting the work of others is one of the best ways to figure stuff out.

This is very true, I often myself have learned in even 'basic' by looking at work that other people have done and simply copying and learning from that. But sometimes if it is explained to you so that you completely understand the function within itself, you can manipulate it to your very own liking. Taking a simple loop fucntion such as a "for next" statement, you can look at it, study it, realize what makes the beginning and end. But until you understand that "For x = 1 to 100" for x means that X is the variable, 1 to 100 is how many times it repeats, you really don't understand what the person is trying to do using this specifig function.

Yeah, you're going to want to use a switch.

All you have to do is make a new page on the event (using "New Page"), then checking the box that says "SWITCH" on the left side. From there, you can choose a switch. Make sure that the event starting thing is "Action Key," not "Auto-Start" or "Parallel Process." Then, on the first page, go to the end of the event, then put in the command "Switch Operations." On the pop-up that comes up, choose the switch you just made, make sure it turns "on," and voila! Your event will not loop.

Teleporting away from the map (if it's not on the map you can move on at the end of the messages) works too, but you'll want to do the switch thing anyways.

Thank you! It works like a charm! haha. And yes I do realize there used to be tutorials, I tried looking for them. We can either get a hold of him or create our own using this thread. Either way, as much as this is a learning experience for me, it can be for others who click on this topic looking for information on how to get started. I realize that this program makes it a LOT easier then designing your own engine from scratch, but there is still WORK involved. You have to know scripting to an extent, so if anyone comes across this thread and has any questions or suggestions please feel free! ^_^

Hello all you RPG fans and RPG creators, as you may already know, RPG Maker is a wonderful tool that lets you shape your very own fantasy into a playable virtual reality. But some of us may have some questions about events and other functions that all the while seem obvious to other people, you simply can't figure out. I am creating this thread due to the fact that I just obtained a copy of RPG Maker, and I can't wait to get my game finished and release it for everyone to play. Not only that, but I seem to be having an issue understanding how to stop an event once it is set to autostart. If anyone can let me know I would greatly appretiate it. I shall be looking into the help file itself to see if I can better understand triggers and how they are used in comparison to events themselves. But for now, I can't get past the opening scene lol. I have the basic plot laid out as text by the main character, but once it's done it loops; I have tried "break loop", but that doesn't seem to work. I have a strong feeling it has to do with the switches, but if anyone could reply before I figure this out I would greatly appretiate it. And please, use this thread to ask any newbie questions you want!
