Yes it was common, and that is from the second game, and Even martial arts teachers had sex with students. Japan is and was a very open sexual country.


Sibling incest was accepted in ancient Japan, as well as offering up of young boys and girls to temples to be sexually used by priests as well as samurai. In this way, incest ceased to be a morally wrong act. Bathing with parents and sleeping in the same bed as parents is a normal practice even today, and easily leads on to sexual intercourse with parents or between siblings. Also Child prostitution used to be normal back in the day!

In Japan, sibling incest when the partners were born from the same mother was an absolute taboo. However, a marriage between half-siblings (different mothers), or other relatives like uncles or cousins was acceptable; quite common in the imperial nobility, actually.

Ancient (kodai) Japan, by the way, ended with the advent of warrior rule during the 12th century (even though it is being debated if drawing such a clear line is really correct, since the imperial political system did not just disappear but rather got displaced over time) - so technically, samurai (warrior nobility) did not exist in ancient Japan. We call the period of warrior rule until the advent of Tokugawa-rule medieval (chûsei).
